Dead Man Walking

I used to work as an apprentice baker and I was fond of making cookies and bread...
But.. What's happening to my life? Why everything is changing around me?!
I found this strange sword and now I can see and speak with dead people; moreover a sort of legendary ghost (idiot) hero is following me everywhere!

"Listen to me! You've to become a hero and defeat the pure evil who is tormenting this country... You..."
"What?! Me... An hero?! You're really crazy, dude! I'm a baker! (or I'm trying to be... ^^) And what would be this "pure evil"? "
"The source of "PURE EVIL" is a demonic witch who..."
"A witch? A demonic witch?! Hey, if you're really a legendary hero as you said, why didn't you kill her by yourself?
"Obviously, I tried... But she killed me and now I'm a ghost."

"Oh, suuure! It's time to check if the desired consistency of my cookies is reached!"
"..."

This is so cool that I almost thought it was not done with Krita.

Brush engines I recognized: little spray, hatching brush, maybe hairy brush?

Gorgeous! I love the use of hue variation to make the main character pop out with warmer tones. Such a complex layout, my eyes keep buzzing everywhere, yet it still feels balanced. I love it! Having (briefly) worked in a bakery though, I only wish the people I worked were this attractive! lol

Your work always has a textural quality that I love. Can I ask how you created the scratching away effect in the bottom right corner? Is that the hairy brush with the eraser mode?

Agreed. I'll get it in asap. On a side note, since the recent site upgrade it's now much faster / easier to upload new images. ;D

By the way, if I link your name / handle, where would you prefer it to link to - the turnangel site or the DeviantArt link?

EDIT: Ah, dang. There's no .kra file, which is currently a requirement for the Krita showcase. Any chance of a .kra (whatever resolution you wish)?

This blew me away, it's amazing how you manage to get the feel of a traditional painting on a digital piece. I didn't anticipate something this awesome could be done with Krita's tools; I'm eager to learn how you did it, at least a little bit! ;D

Thanks for the enthusiastic comments, guys! ^^
I've added a link to the kra file in the first post!
Answering to Lukas I used the chalk, deform, hairy, pixel, smudge and spray brush for this painting.

Now I'm going to explain the magic trick of "scratching" my works...
First of all please don't paint using perfectly round tip for your brushes. That's the EVIL (LOL), "rougher" is better! So it's the real world!
-1) Create a new "painter" layer above your picture.
-2) Fill the layer with the white color.
-3) Decrease a little the layer transparency to see your picture below.
-4) Take a rough or rake brush (for instance a-2 rake is a good tip) and "scratch" the surface of your picture with the black color.
-5) Increase layer opacity to 100%.
-6) Apply filter->emboss->emboss with variable depth.
-7) Change layer blending mode to "overlay"
-8) Adjust layer transparency.
-9) Merge with the layer below.

With the same trick I've created the canvas texture too, so be creative!

There are some questions for the developers:
-1) What's the "mix" option? Selecting it the brush color doesn't mix with the canvas color... (This is what I'm looking for and it's very important for me, because without it I'm forced to paint in a certain manner.)
-2) Why inverting the position of the graph extreme points of "softness" option the brush behavior doesn't change at all? (I'm looking for a brush with a darker border and the center brighter.)
-3) I'm compiling without qtshiva... Is it really useful for Krita filters?
-- OpenShiva >= 0.9.12 was found
-- Found OpenShiva: OpenShiva;GTLCore
-- checking for module 'QtShiva>=0.9.0'
-- package 'QtShiva>=0.9.0' not found
-- QtShiva was NOT found.

And at last the "bad" (I haven't tested the today Krita build yet, maybe these problems don't exist anymore):
-1) The warp tool is really useful for fixing the painting mistakes, but, when I'm working with many levels of different blending (multiply, overlay, etc. etc.), after selecting an area by its outline and using the warp tool Krita crash frequently.
-2) When I change the transparency, the "burn" level has a strange behavior.
-3) Edge detection->Sobel doesn't work or crash Krita when I'm working with many levels of different blending (multiply, overlay, etc. etc.).
-4) The levels management window is too "sensitive" and frequently I move layers without noticing.

That's all, folks!

Hi,

Thanks for all the detail!

* the mix brush was intended to work with the color mixing palette, but isn't finished yet. Does the "mix" option in the pixel brush work for you? I still have an open task to fix mixing (and add flow...) -- but we're in freeze now, and adding new stuff is Frowned Upon by the maintainer. (Well, that's me, but I can frown in a mirror).

* softness -- that's for Cyrille and Lukas to discuss.

* shiva: there's a package with shiva filters that can be used which you don't have installed, I think. However, currently all shiva filters crash in Krita. There's already an open bug for that, the only think needed is to find some time for Cyrille to fix the crash :-)

* warp crashes: if you have a crash, please report it to bugs.kde.org. We really want to become really utterly stable, but as developers we see far fewer crashes than users. Maybe because we don't paint so much -- every time I sit down to paint I start coding instead.

* for the burn and sobel issues, please also enter bugs in bugs.kde.org -- then we cannot forget

* the layer docker sensitivity is a known issue. We're not yet sure how to solve it since it's mostly a problem in the toolkit.

thanks again!

Wee, tutorial for Krita! :)

Can you paint the desired result -- the brush mask?
The curve in softbrush represent the softness from the center to the edge.

Maybe you need to put the topleft point little down and the rightbottom little up? I need to see the desired mask to help you.

I feel quite concerned about this one. Could you be more precise ? When does it crash ? Directly at the activation of the tool, while warping, or when clicking on Apply ? If you experience it again, could you file a bug report so that we have the backtrace to work with ?
Thanks :)

Btw, this drawing is just amazing !

Actually It ignores the canvas color and try to mix the color painted by the brush in that specific moment.

Found it! The package name is libqtgtl, I've downloaded the source from http://www.opengtl.org. After compiling I can select shiva filters, but obviously they crash. ;D

Sorry for the inaccurate question... Now I'll try again. :)
With the last revision of the brush engine is it possible to make something like this?

Ok, good news... With the svn revision 1175519 Krita doesn't crash anymore with the warp tool after clicking on apply. I've tested thoroughly with many levels and different blend modes for half day without any problem. Case closed. ^^ I really love this tool is so intuitive and fast, however moving the control points above a dark background is a bit problematic, because it's hard to see them clearly.

I tried, but it was not possible. First it was hard due to curve type
(hopefully Krita 2.4 will have new curves http://wiki.koffice.org/index.php?title ... Plan#Krita)

Second, we need some feature for it, something like wet edges from PS. Or maybe MyPaint has something. Thanks for the inspiration! :)

Ok, I understand... Thank you very much for the effort. With this feature and some artistic trick ;) it's possible to simulate realistic watercolor, so it's really important (especially for me ;D ). Unfortunately Mypaint doesn't have such feature at the moment: the project leader is working on something similar, but it's not a priority for him so I'll have to wait for long long time... However...
Thanks again for everything! :)
