First comics page

Thu Sep 16, 2010 6:55 pm
I'm happy to share here my first comics page drawn entirely with Krita 2.3 !
Here it is :

I'm gonna send a .kra file, but I'd like to resize it before and I'm having a bug with transparency mask and scale to new size (reported in the tracker).
So I'm waiting for it to be fixed to send it.

lol. Hippy, peace loving penguins, mutants and guns... What more could you ask for in a comic? ;P

Seriously though, nice character design, very well illustrated (as ever). Makes me want to try colouring it! I'm curious... How much of the outlines were done with the sketch brush? They look like the sketch brush, but I don't see any of that thing that it usually does where two lines close together will get a sort of "magnetic" effect with new lines being drawn jumping between the two drawn lines... if that makes sense?

Anyway, looking forward to that transparency bug getting fixed to get it into the Showcase! (Way to motivate the devs! lol) I'm also intruiged to see what the text will be... something interesting is obviously happening... I want to know what, dangit! ;D

Shades of Gotlib and Alexis, especially in the bottom-left panel. Love the movement in the bottom-right panel!

You've got the idea ^^

I've some text already in it but I didn't trace it as I didn't find a good brush for it (is there a plan for a text tool?), and also as the story isn't finished I may change them so they are not final yet.

All the inking (except the hatching and the frames) is done with sketch brush. But I use to toggle with erase mode to dig in the shapes, this explains what you asked I think.

@Boud : Thank you for this nice comment!

Would a text "shape" work? If you you can just drag one out of the shapes tab. Which you may have to add.

Out of interest, what was the original canvas size you drew this on AnimTim?

I really dislike comics with clearly printed text -- that always seems to look wrong, even if the font makes it look a bit hand-writing-like. I wonder how we could support hand-lettering comics better.

I guess people could use the text shape to lay the text out, then hand draw on a layer above it to get a more hand drawn feel...

I agree fonts/text in comics must not be too much "clear", hand-drawn look is much better.
Something cool would be to can add some shape letters (custom ones) and use them as guide to draw over. This way all text would keep a size and shape continuity but with some stroke width variations.

@verbalshadow: Yes there is text shapes, I didn't find them at first when I was looking for text tool… Now I know it's there.

@Kubuntiac: Original canvas size I used is 2008x3071 ( I started from the "Comics-US template", 17x26cm at 300ppi ).

So here is the first episode of Wasted Mutants.

And now that the bug on transparency masks with pixel resize is fixed, I can send the .kra file of page 03.
(Also I've discovered another bug with this file: pixel resize works now, but when I try to change dpi value from 300 to 150 it scales down vector layers. Report to come in the bug-tracker !)

Enjoy!
