Infiltrating The Mines:

After doing coding so much I finally wanted to draw something again.
It's not really so good but I'm still trying to find my style/workflow ;D

here you can find a bigger version:

WAH!!! That's amazing! The background and textures are so detailed, and that is one hell of a kick-ass girl! You must tell us your workflow and how long this piece took you! :D

Nice try!
I like the background.
The character position is a bit weird but there is some idea ;)

"I'm not really so good," he says. Well, if you had a graphic novel out in that style, I'd run to the shop and buy it-- it reminds me of some of the best in our collection.

Thanks for the compliments

@Animtim
Well yes, hmm... it was supposed to look like she is making some kind of backflip :D

@valerievk
It took me roughly 5 days.
And my workflow, hmmm...?
Well I started out with a sketch made in Alchemy.
I imported it into krita made a new layer on top of it and started painting in value :D
Then a few layers to add more detail.
Then two layers for lightening and darkening some regions (with the blending modes "Increase Luminosity" and "Decrease Luminosity").
Then a layer to color it roughly (with blending mode "Color"), filling the layer with the gradient tool using blue for the top and a reddish brown for the bottom.
Then adding a few more colors for the woman and the desert on this layer.
Then adding an filter layer ("Levels") to enhance contrast and lightening a bit.
Then another new layer to add some more detail in color this time.
And a last layer with that consists completely of noise set to the blending mode "Grain Merge" with a transparency mask only opaque there where I needed some grain :)

The brushes I used:
- Pixel Brush for mostly everything
- Smudge Brush (with color smudge enabled) to paint the skin and where i needed smooth gradients
- Sketch brush with low/medium opacity to do some structure (in the desert and on the rocks)

Thats it :D

You started in Alchemy! That's interesting. Maybe you could reveal what it is in Alchemy that's better than Krita right now? (so that it can eventually be incorporated in Krita? :P ) Back when I tried Alchemy, it was awesome but I couldn't get it to work on the Linux side, bah!

Thank you very much for the detailed breakdown, it was quite insightful!

Well it's not really better just different :D.
Alchemy was made for developing design ideas.
So the Alchemy "Brushes" create some randomness to the strokes to create negative shapes. This enables the painter to see patterns he/she wouldn't have thought of.
I personally like the "Mic Shapes" option to create strokes that are modified my the volume of the microphone input. If you have pulseaudio installed you can route the standard audio autput to the mic input.
You just play some cool music you like and paint with the beat :D
I definitively want more of Alchemy's functionality in krita.
I've got already some ideas. Maybe Lukas let me lay hand on his expirement bush :D
But right now I have a lot of other code that needs a bit love :D
So I think it will take me some time till I can look into this.

PS: you should try Alchemy again it's written in java after all.
And it works for me with openjdk, too.
