Try setting $XDG_DATA_DIRS to $KDEDIR/share. Also, try setting $XDG_CONFIG_DIRS to $KDEDIR/etc/xdg
If you have not installed shared-mime-info inside $KDEDIR, you will need to for mimetypes to function. Please also try removing your Qt configuration:

Again, thanks for your effort on trying to help. Unfortunately, no change, same problem :S I've also tried to change my xsessions/kde4.desktop profile to run "startkde" with "env -i" to wipe out any env vars before I set the XDG ones as you recommended, but it didn't solve the problem. Removing ~/.config didn't change anything also. I don't know what else I can try :'( The problem is definitely with the launcher applet, "plasma_applet_launcher.so". I could post an strace here if you think it might help to give us a clue ... Thanks again! |

Hi,
Here's some strace information ...
This is the reversed output until the moment of the SIGSEGV: http://www.megadriver.com.br/kdestuff/strace.txt thanks |

Update ...
kmenuedit also crashes. If I delete the ksycoca files it generates a new one but crashes the same way. kde4-menu crashes too. []'ss |

Try removing the entire /var/tmp/kdecache-$USER folder outside a KDE session.

Doesn't work :S Same problem ... Booted in runlevel 3, root, rm -R /var/tmp/kdecache*, logged out, logged in with the normal user, same problem. Then, "useradd" for a new user, startx, same problem :S Thanks |

Just a question ...
Is there any way to compile kdebase-workspace with some debug option ? The crash messages, stderr and stuff is not giving any clue ... It's very strange a menu applet to crash like this, also with a brand new and never logged in before user ... Thx []'ss |

Could you please post the output of "export" from within KDE 4?

This is appearing more and more likely to be a bug in your systems libraries, or in the way Qt was compiled. One final thing to check though: Have you installed shared-mime-info in $KDEDIR/share?

Yep, installed shared-mime-info as you said, but the problem is still there. Already tried compiling original QT4 from Trolltech and it crashes the same way. The one installed now is "qt-copy" from KDE ftp. If it is a bug with my system libraries why the hell every single application that I compile from KDE4 works fine and just the one related to the launcher/menus crashes ?!? It is odd ... Thanks again, |

It is because most applications do not use the Sycoca, unless they have plugins. No idea how the applications with plugins ( Konqueror, any KParts app, etc ) work though.
As a final check, try configuring Qt with the following configuration flags, and be sure to apply the patches to qt-copy:
