Hi developers, first and foremost a big thank you for making Krita available on my old WinXP machine. It's an amazing software and I'm having lots of fun. :D
I used the 2.7.9.10 build until the release day of the official 2.8.0.3 witch I promptly installed. And I noticed a problem.

After 20-30 min of continuous use the brush looses responsiveness. The brush freezes for an instant at the beginning of each stroke. The stroke is drawn only after the instant passes, and after that moment the brush works ok until I lift the pen from the tablet. As time passes the delay lengthens to half a second and more. It's particularly annoying during hatching, where a series of quick strokes get drawn (slowly) often only after I finished using the pen, so I'm drawing blind.

I've tested 3 builds drawing a 3200*2400 image:
  • 2.7.9.10 : works ok and memory use (in the task manager) went from 268MB to 397MB. In an hour of continuous use it never got over 400MB
  • 2.7.9.11 and 2.8.0.3: after 20-30 min of use both began to freeze and memory use kept increasing to 600 - 700MB, after 1 hour it gets too annoying to use

So for the time being I'll keep using the old build. Hope someone has a clue as to why this happens.
Sorry for my english and keep up the good work :)

First I would check that the krita version you've installed is the XP version.

If not that, it might be a driver/ computer issue. I had an issue similar to this and it was a driver issue.

If not that, it may be a memory issue. having little RAM is not a cool idea with a paint program and if you don't save often.

If it is none of those then I have no idea! Sorry!

Thanks for your reply :)
  • I've checked and the builds tested are all for WinXP
  • It may be a driver issue, it's an old computer, but I'm not using hardware accelleration. In the preferences OpenGL is disabled, so it shouldn't be the problem, or not?
  • There's an issue with RAM, yes. But in the sense that the last 2 builds keep eating memory without stopping. The oldest build works like a charm: tops at around 400MB and doesn't go over. Anyway my computer got 2GB, it should be enough for 1 layer images

I will check the drivers (nVidia 8600M GT) but since OpenGL accelleration is off I don't think it's the culprit.

Hm... We did have other reports of a possible memory leak in 2.8, though. But we haven't been able to find it yet.

Hi boudewijn, does the leak happen only on WinXP or in other platforms too (Linux/OsX/Vista/Win7)?
Please let me know if there's something I can do to help find the leak (as a non-programmer). For example: are there debug builds or something?
