i also have problem with some brushes and with stability.
is there an option to get old 2.8 ver.?

same here,,,,,my laptop have 8 gig ram,vary poor CUP,,,,,,but every thing worked just fine in Photoshop(with exact same canvas size 5500px*3000px).
and my solution is if any brush in krita is super super slow,then I will run some experiments on those options ,‘size’,‘rotation’,‘scatter’........., lower their numbers or totally turn them off. which probably would change the bursh it self, but I'd rather take the faster brush.

5500x3000 is actually quite big, and you should probably want to wait for the cache-optimisation that will come with Krita 3.0 to work fully speedy on those sizes. Mind you, the stable build for this probably won't come out till march, so keep an eye out for testing builds.

So... OpenGL should be FAST right?!

It's the reason things are slow. It also looks awful. Something is very broken with the OpenGL code. If I turn it off things are very nice and fast.

Similar spec machine running 15.10... OpenGL ON - a bleedin' nightmare, OpenGL OFF - no sluggishness at all.

Please check the 3.0 pre-alpha in the news posts. There's portables for Linux there.

I noticed an odd behaviour in relation to speed of brush refresh on OSX.

- set the tab to layers view and draw with a small brush and you get a stuttering delay, something like 500ms update
- set the tab to tool options and draw with a small brush and you get a barely perceptible 20ms delay

I am just guessing but I bet the layer preview thumbnail is being updated while you draw so it affects processing.
