Alt + Click instead?

Sat Feb 21, 2015 12:45 pm

In every windows paint / photo editing software like Photoshop, Painter, ArtRage, Clip studio, I use the keyboard short Alt + Click ti pick a colour. In Krita I have to learn to use Ctrl + Click instead. Not much to learn, but I keep doing wrong all the time. The Alt + Click is in my backbone since it is a Windows standard and has been so for as long as I remember. So why not in Krita? Please?

In Linux Alt+click is used to move windows, so that shortcut can't be used. You can still it though.

I can live with it. Still Alt + Click is probably the most used keyboard shortcut there is in a paint program, on Windows that is (on a Mac it is Opt + Click). If there was a way to alter the standard keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Click in the keyboard shortcut editor in Krita I would do that. But I can not find any such thing to edit. Can you help me?

I think we should special-case the defaults per OS.

Everything that makes an easy walk over from Photoshop or Painter (or whatever software) to Krita is welcome. If you feel like home at soon as you walk in - makes you want to stay. So "special-case the defaults per OS" is a very good idea.

This is a problem for me too. I occasionally accidentally switch colors with the color picker because ctrl+space+click is tied to panning.

As far as using alt+click, I think a lot of artists have to disable window moves using alt+click anyways because a lot of programs like maya, houdini, nuke, or tvpaint use alt+click for canvas/viewport panning.

Why don't you tie colour pick to rightclick/alt and pop-up to '/' and leave ctrl empty? I only have to do that once per device, and I build Krita myself, meaning new builds won't break that.

The config for canvas input settings are in the resource folder in the input folder, you can even back it up.

Edit: I am not against os specific default, I am just not sure what we should do further about specific user needs when the user has the power to configure their way out already.

Maybe so, the panning in those programs are using alt+click. I was just thinking of those more paint specific software like Painter, SketchBook, Photoshop, ArtRage and so on...they all use the alt+click for colour picking. It's not a big deal for me if there is some difference. I have altered the shortcut... but still Krita will not use the Windows standard in paint programs in this specific function.

Thanks all for having yor opinions on this! Happy painting :)
