Krita on Surface Pro 3

Fri Apr 03, 2015 8:22 am
After installing Surface Hub on my Surface Pro 3 i find Krita working OK, even pressure sensitivity! I will try the Gemini build to see If the UI is a bit beter since Krita UI is a little small to handle on a tablet. Anyway, Krita works well on the Surface Pro 3.

Is that with the 32 or 64 bits version of Krita?

I use the 64 bit version. I also tester the Gemini but I found it just terrible. I could not stand the UI. And the Steam thing! Ugly. I compare Gemini to Sketchable, Sketchbook Pro, ArtRage and such and find Gemini UI far behind.

I would like Krita, just like Photoshop CC, have the function to scale up the UI icons and text 200%. That would make Krita just great to work with on Surface Pro 3.

That would be nice. I use sketchable on my tablet and Manga Studio pro a bit more because the icons suite mobile drawing/painting. I would love if Krita's icons could scale up :)

That's something that the Qt5 port actually will make possible, though with quite a bit of work. We've got too many ui elements (like the dual color button) that are hardcoded for a certain number of pixels. Some of those date from even before my involvement in Krita, from before 2003...

See http://blog.davidedmundson.co.uk/blog/high_dpi_progress for more information.

Yes... The sketch part of Gemini needs an update, but right now it's even completely broken. Of the tablet paint apps I've tried, I like Art Flow best, with its two panels. As for the 64 bit version... I tried installing the Surface Hub as well, but on my surface, pressure sensitivity still only works with the x86 version!

This "trick" makes Krita really usable on Surface Pro 3. The tiny interface items made Krita a pain to use for my old eyes. But it was really simple to change the UI, like this: 1. Tap on the Screen and the resolution menu item 2. In the screen resolution window, tap on the link Make text and other items larger or smaller. Make it the Largest. 3. Restart the tablet and have a look at Krita. It has changed the UI and it looks like this = a BIG change. Everything scaled up a bit (the brush and colour things were OK Before), the Icons and the text = all easy to hit and read!

Image

This makes Krita really usable on the Surface Pro 3. Still, like in Photoshop CC, it would be better to make an Krita internal scale, like 150% or 200%. As for the 4K screens that you can buy for your desktop computer, if you can afford it, the same problem with the Krita GUI (and all others software i guess) is there too, not only on tablets.

Krita 3.0 or 3.1 might be a lot better on hi-dpi screens: Qt 5.5 will have a lot better support than Qt 4.8. We'll still have to do a lot of work ourselves, though.

I can understand the amount of work the team has to put into it. And I really appreciate that work... ^-^

It's the same for me -- I had it working with an X64 2.9 beta, once, but never since. It stopped working when I got some Windows update.

It's so strange (and bothersome) that the results are somewhat random. I have pressure sensitivity working on both x86 and x64 versions of Krita with the x64 N-Trig drivers.

For the x64 build, I used the new build from https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/kr ... ts/1223518.

To get krita 64bt pressure sensitivity working on a surface pro 3 download a trial version of photophop cc. Seems to kick in a driver somehow.

Thanks, I'll try that... It sounds pretty weird, but who knows...

Well, _darn_ it. Yes, installing CC restored pressure support on the surface 3 in Krita. _What_ did Adobe add to the device...
