Hi,
I guess I should start at the beginning. I recently tried to update from 2.8.9omething to 2.9.2. I've had Krita working properly for a year or so but when I tried to update things went crazy. I was using the 32 bit version and was updating to the 64 bit version. First I uninstalled the 32 bit version via Revo Uninstaller. Then I ran the 64 bit installer, which ran for a bit then stopped, sorry but I can't remember what the reason was. I ran it again and it crashed again, this time it said there was an older version that had to be removed. Figuring this was the older 2.8 which should have been removed as Revo doesn't miss much. So, I searched the whole registry for every occurrence of krita and KDE, backed them up (just in case) then deleted all of the occurrences, then restarted my computer and tried to install it again. The error this time said he same thing. I'm not new to computers and I was pretty sure I got all the bits and piece of 2.8 cleaned up. At his point I may have messed up, Krita to me is one of the most wonderful programs ever created, I've used Gimp for probably 15 years or so but even it can't compare to krta. Having said that, I was desperate so I installed the 32 version. Other than that warning about I was running the 32 bit on a 64bit machine which wasn't kosher it worked. BUT, I have a quad core 64 bit system with 24 gig of RAM, 2T HD, and Windows 8.1. I really wanted to make full use of that power so, thinking that installing the 32 bit version might have made it possible to make the 64 bit version install. Bad idea I guess. Now it still says it still has to remove the 'older' version. I thought this strange since both were the same version but now it told me that the current 'older' version couldn't be removed and to contact customer support. On a whim I downloaded the portable 64 bit version, which works fine. I could just run it this way but I'd still rather have the right version in the right place. I backed up my workspaces, bushes, patterns, gradients, templates etc but I'm at a loss for how to proceed. I have my other old laptop with Linux on it, also krita on it but I really want to use my newer, more powerful one. I'm really hoping someone can sort this out for me because krita is too magnificent not to have working. It's ok to call me a dope if this whole thing was my fault. Marv

It seems that my problem is harder than I thought to solve. I thought I'd have a reply or two by now, but it's not that big of a deal, I just use the 32 bit version and put up with that 64 bit warning. I wonder if there is a way to disable that?

Sorry most people working on krita are probably asleep. I'm not sure how to help with this problem, you can also always try to vist krita's IRC channel here: https://krita.org/irc/
Really sorry about your troubles, I hope you can get it solved soon! |

I am no Krita man but just looking at that great big wedge of text gives me a headache.
You talk of multiple problems - I suggest you create a paragraph for each one. Even better, and that is the way these forums are usually used, is if you have a different thread for each one. That way your problems get treated in a modular way and the solutions are much easier to find for others suffering from the same fate. HTH

I divided it into paragraphs as per your wishes. I didn't divide it into different threads because everything might be related to each other.

Hello Mperryman,
I don't know for sure but is there Krita.rc file of the older install in appdata ( I don't know exact place in windows) you can delete it. May be deleting it can solve the problem. I am not a developer and I am just guessing the cause. sorry that you had to experience such problem. I'll ask others as well if they have seen such error, will post here if i find something. thank you |

I don't think we actually store anything in the registry: Krita only saves data to %USER%\AppData\Roaming\krita and %USER%\AppData\Local\krita. I don't know about Revo, or whether it could cause problems. You can install both the 32 and 64 bits version next to each other, that doesn't give any problems, they don't interfere with each other.
But the portable 64 bits version (if you get it from files.kde.org/krita/windows) is just as good as the msi installer version, if that works for you, why not go for that? |

Revo is just an uninstaller that cleans up stuff left that the original uninstaller leaves. Usually it works really well. It's only problem is that occasionally it removes a little too much. I don't [i]thin[i] that could cause this problem. It's been said that I posted too much information, which may be true. Ultimately it comes down to one problem: I can't install 2.9.__ because of an older version that can't be uninstalled. I got the portable version after I couldn't get the standard version to work. It works fine. I was just hoping to use the normal 'non-portable' version' . If it comes down to it I cn use it that way. I was just wondering if this was a known issue and whether there was a fix for it. I can also use the desktop 32 bit version. I could also use it on my Linux laptop but it doesn't have the horsepower that my main one has. Sorry if I complicate the issue, that wasn't my intention. I've fixed things for 45 years, varying from electronic devices to 1000 ton chillers and boilers and when I first inquire about the problem I like to get as much info as possible. Hence my long post regarding this. The portable version will do fine, thanks for the help. |
