OpenGL issue/ black screen of death

Thu Nov 19, 2015 6:20 pm
I did post here before about my canvas being black, but no matter what I do, I cannot get Krita working on my tablet. I was working with Microsoft customer service for 2 hours this morning. I did many scans, I uninstalled and re-installed drivers. I did everything in my power to fix the "black screen of death" with Krita. I even did an entire reset on my surface pro 4. I do not know what to say. It just isn't working. This is very frustrating because I bought my tablet to use Krita with. I even see advertisements with some guy using Krita on a surface pro 4. Why can't I enjoy this program? Does anyone else have this problem? If I disable OpenGL then I can't manipulate the image the way I want to.

If the canvas is black when OpenGL is enabled, you've got one of the broken Intel GPU drivers, I'm afraid. Intel shipped broken drivers through a good part of 2014, and there are _still_ manufacturers shipping laptops with broken drivers. And to add insult to injury, it's _really_ hard to download a generic driver from Intel's website and install it, Windows wants to prevent you from doing that and points you at drivers from your hardware manufacturer. Who, _of course_ never releases updated drivers.

So would these drivers show up on devices built in 2015? My surface pro 4 is brand new. I did have Krita working prior to a firmware update earlier this month. I ended up sending the entire device back to Microsoft for replacement because even their tech guys are having trouble figuring this out. Maybe my device did get one of the intel GPU drivers from that 2014 batch. Oh well. It sucks knowing that some devices could be lemons.

Yes, it really sucks. I would have expected better of Microsoft, and, in fact, on my SP3, there are _no_ problems! Could you check which gpu driver version is on the device, as exactly as possible, please. Then I can try to contact Intel and see whether they know what's up.

Hi Boud,

I also have this OpenGL black canvas issue on the SP4. GPU is Intel HD Graphics 520, driver version 20.19.15.4326. It works fine when OpenGL is disabled, but panning, zooming etc is very sluggish of course.

Not sure if this has been resolve or not. But I was able to defeat the black screen of death on my surface pro 4 by rolling back the display driver. The program works fine now ^-^

I don't have the option to roll back, and I expect a Windows update will restore it to a current version anyway at some point. Do you have the driver version number? Maybe that will help the developers pinpoint where the problem started.

Can someone with windows 10 and a working version of Krita tell me which version of the Intel drivers to use?

I know the 20.19.15 version is not working, and that is the latest version. Surface Pro 4 shipped with them and it says they are up-to-date.

Yes, it looks like a recent new version of Intel drivers broke Krita again. I'm not on Windows right now, but I can tell you that this week, we've got a coding sprint at my place, and opengl support (for 3.0) is really high on the agenda.
