How can I totally reset the Krita GUI?

(Windows 8.1, desktop version (not Steam))
I want to reset the location of all my toolboxes, dockers, etc, so they are exactly as they are on a fresh install.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling twice. I have deleted the config folder, I have searched my folders to find where Krita is hiding the UI layout so I can delete it and reset it, but all to no avail. No matter what I do or what files I destroy, Krita finds a way to dig up the old, messed-up config and shove it in my face.

How can I force Krita to reset everything to default, so it is like I never opened it before, and all the dockers are where they are supposed to be?

Found it!

Rename/remove the Krita configuration file

c:\Users\<Your-Username>\AppData\Roaming\.kde\share\config\kritarc

Rename/remove the Krita resources folder. It contains your brushes and shortcuts configuration.

c:\Users\<Your-Username>\AppData\Roaming\.kde\share\apps\krita

did you look at the documentation site on krita for the answer?

https://docs.krita.org/KritaFAQ#Resetti ... figuration

I didn't know if you saw that, or saw it and got confused. We can update it if something is unclear

I guess these instructions just aren't clear enough for me. Where is the Krita configuration file? \.kde\share\config\kritarc is not recognized by my computer files when I try to search for it. Any help? Thanks.

See the FAQ: https://docs.krita.org/en/KritaFAQ.html ... figuration -- the exact location depends on your operating system.

Thank you for responding so quickly. I have a windows 10 operating system. I have somehow lost all my brushes except for three erasers. So, I need to fix this.

This is where I am looking in my file explorer:
(C:) > Users> (username)> AppData > Local >Krita
When I look into the Krita file there it only contains a folder called 'cache'.
And when I open that, a folder named ' qmichache'.
When I open this folder , it just says a bunch of stuff that is not really words.
There is no 'Kritarc' that I can find. Any more help? Thanks again.

The default resources for krita (such as the brush presets, etc) are more or less indestructible and stored in a special location that gets recreated every time you start krita. Even if you try to get rid of them, you can't.

It may be that at some time you've selected the Erasers tag for the Brush Presets docker, in which case it will display only the three erasers that are part of the krita default resources. Does it say 'Erasers' in a drop down selector box at the top of the Brush Presets docker, just above the three eraser icons? If so, click that box to get a list of all tags and click the 'All' entry at the top of the list to get all the brush presets listed in the docker.

Your kritarc file is in (C:) > Users> (username)> AppData > Local (not in the krita folder there) and will be a file called 'kritarc' at the bottom of the list, after the folders.
This file contains settings for the look and feel and behaviour of krita, that you have probably spent time and effort setting up and should only be deleted as a last resort.

(C:) > Users> (username)> AppData > Roaming > krita is a folder that contains all your personal resources (imported brushes, bundles, etc) as well as resource management settings files. These should not be deleted either except as a last resort.

Okay, you were right, it was set to erasers. :< Anyway, I did mess with some of the other folders, even deleted some in desperation. I uninstalled and reinstalled after that. I hope I did not mess anything else up. What a wonderful forum! Everyone is so knowledgeable and helpful. Thanks. ^-^ ^-^ ^-^

Most problems with krita are due to lack of familiarity or forgetting stuff you used to know and this forum is the best place to get help and advice.

If you've deleted files and folders, they will be recreated (in their default state) the next time you start krita, so you'll have lost any personal info/changes/resources that were associated with, contained in or managed by whatever you deleted.

The most 'dangerous' thing you can do is to make changes to the contents of those files so please don't even think about doing that (unless you're absolutely and totally sure that you really know and fully understand what you are doing).

Uninstalling and reinstalling krita will have no effect at all on the existing configuration and resources. It's designed that way so you can upgrade krita to the next version and still have all your existing configuration and resources intact and carry on as you are used to.

When you've made changes to krita and set things up, imported personal resources, etc, it's a good idea to make a copy/backup of your kritarc file and the entire krita folder ((C:) > Users> (username)> AppData > Roaming > krita) so that you can restore what you used to have after any kind of disaster.
