You need to talk to the makers of the image viewers. Supporting .kra files is really simple since there's a full-size preview image inside the .kra file, which is just a zip file. The Irfanview maker however has explicitly refused to support .kra files because he doesn't understand he doesn't need to parse the xml that describes the image and the layer structure, only fetch the preview.
In any case, there's nothing that we can do here. |

Hi!
Just in case, there is a thread at XnView (which is an excellent viewer!) forums to suggest support for Krita's format. Please, feel free to show your interest there with a +1: http://newsgroup.xnview.com/viewtopic.php?f=60&t=33385 Regards. |

It seems a bit fiddly, but it looks like it's possible to add support for image formats to Windows default image viewer and for preview in File Explorer (or any other application which is based on WIC):
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee719883(v=vs.85).aspx But maybe it's not such a big priority, just found it interesting that it was possible.

We have a krita shell extension for windows. It's available on the windows download page. It's just, we cannot go into other people's programs to force them to support kra files

I've looked into that before. It seems clumsy, has lots of COM stuff and need to pay attention to thread apartment (which I have no idea what it's about.) And it doesn't feel right to let other programs to just take the image content with that API. For thumbnail preview purpose I consider the IThumbnailProvider implementation enough. Of course, if someone make me a pull request with some clean code then I may consider merging it in. But I really wouldn't code it myself for now. Also, I've never heard of any software other than Windows ones that supports Windows Imaging Component. Do you know any? |

No idea, probably none. Just found out about WIC myself. |
