Hello Krita folk - I'm new here, but I really need your help. I've had a brand new Win 8.1 PC sitting in a box for 2 years - 3 weeks ago, I finally had to start using it. I've tried installing Krita 3, 64bit regular, and portable - everything boots up just fine, but as soon as I try to use something, I get that "Krita has stopped working" message and it shuts down. So, after uninstalling everything, I ran an old installer for Krita 2.8.3 that I had on an external HD, and that works just fine (although I haven't tried adding any brushes just yet).
I'm not a "tech friendly" person, hey, I'm not even a very good artist, but I still love doing digital art, it's pretty much how I spend most of my time, as I'm disabled and on my own. I had just started getting comfortable with Krita 3 on my old machine - is there anything I could tell you that might help figure out what the problem is? I do have the Event Viewer's error log if it would help. Any help would be very much appreciated - I really do love this program. Thanks in advance |

Even Microsoft does not support Windows Vista any more. It has reached the end of its life. I suggest you install a new operating system such as Kubuntu if you want to use Krita.
Whatever you do, do not go on the Internet with an operating system that does not receive patches any more. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news...

Well, win8 isn't isn't vista. I haven't got any problems on my win8 test laptop. It sounds more like you're suffering from a broken intel driver, so it would be a good idea to try to update to a later version. In the meantime, you can try disabling opengl.

Boudewijn, thank you - I'm going to try and see if I can figure out how to do what you've suggested, and I will let you know if it worked. I'm really hating this new computer, but it's all I have to work with right now. Wish me luck - I'll need it |

Well, we have a victory - of sorts. Disabling Opengl worked...but being me, I wish I knew why, lol. When I looked into updating the driver - oi, what a mess. Windows tells me I have the most up to date drivers for my machine. The support page at Intel says otherwise. What I have is an Intel(R) HD Graphics 4600, and the version # for the driver is 10.18.10.3621...Intel's latest drivers for that card start with 15. This computer has been in a box for 2 years, and no updates have been downloaded (I'm always afraid to do that because if something breaks, I have no way of fixing it) - is that why Windows is saying my drivers are up to date? Can I just download the latest and install it by hand, or will that make an even bigger mess of things? *sigh* I never had these problems before - I really miss my old machine I really wanted to fix this without asking for help, but I'm in over my head here - I'm afraid I'm going to break this thing, lol.. |

Always install all updates; otherwise it's not safe to use the computer connected to the internet. Then, if needed, manually update the intel driver to the latest version.
