Apparently text shapes can be resized, but it's possible only when multiple shapes are selected.

I'm just wondering if this is intended.

I had the same issue. Accidentally found that if you check the "uniform scaling" checkbox in the Tool options when you select the text with the select shapes tool, it allows you to resize a single box.
