The weather desktop is a wallpaper plugin that changes the wallpaper based on the weather conditions, you can find an early version here http://kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=102185. You can probably install a more recent one from your distribution. |

The idea about the voting is to have two things in effect
1) We need to make certain that the wallpaper holds a certain level of quality. 2) That this is handled by everyone here. I'm trying to set something up right now, will get back to you guys when its fixed. About the licence thing. This is getting on my tit a bit ![]() Personally I can't see any problem with CC licences so I think that we should at this point go "Yes, CC is ok as long as you're the CC licence holder AND agree that this might go into Plasma Next and be distributed" - if someone with extensive knowledge of licensing law want to tell me that doesn't work, come at me bro! So CC is ok, aslong as you hold the CC licence AND agree that it will be distributed. Oh and I thought we should plan for dual-screen wallpapers too (there is some talk about it and I think we might as well start looking at them, if push comes to shove, it might be TWO wallpapers (or three) with "Right" and "Left" versions - but hopefully some nice automated feature will be in place any time soon)

Uh, CC already states the latter. Anyone can redistribute it anywhere. Also note that there are different CC licenses (CC-SA being copyleft, CC-BY being not etc.) I'm also not sure how any of this is a problem, as the picture is not an executable file and thus it doesn't link to GPL code in any way... It might only be a policy issue, where you want all images to be under a single license for whatever reason that might be.
That's an interesting idea. I have a dual-monitor setup (pretty new, so I'm quite new to this whole thing). Right now I use different wallpapers, on my left (primary) one I have a cat photo (because cats are one of the most overpowered animals, what with their hearing, sight, footpads etc.) and on my right I have a bald eagle photo (because I'm an ecology student and thus animals are quite par for the course, and also because the eagle is the allied mascot). Both have a lot of blue colour, because I want to have the wallpaper match the system colours, and those I have set to Glacier at the moment (I used a green theme before, and my desktop was green as well). I'm definitely happy for the fact that I can set two different wallpapers for each screen, because it gives them certain personality of their own, and there are always more good wallpapers than there is screen space ![]() |

For licensing problems, in case it hasn't been mentioned previously - please contact kde-licensing@kde.org, they should be able to sort you out.
I believe KDE already has some policies on Techbase concerning licensing as well.

I've emailed them but I need to join the list so the email is awaiting moderation for now - there is a page concerning licensing and boy is it strict and mostly not-applicable to this very specific case - essentially I would say lets roll with the punches and get suggestions going if a reply comes along and demands a certain licence version we will cross that bridge when we get there. They have been duly informed though so until they reply or otherwise we're in the clear.

Same for me. I emailed them two weeks ago and I guess my post is still awaiting moderation. |

I'm not sure if the list moderator is active - I've since moderated those messages, so they will have now been seen by the mailing list.

From http://techbase.kde.org/Policies/Licensing_Policy
"Standalone media files such as images may be licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Unported licence at http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ . This does not apply to icons or anything which is likely to be mixed with content under our normal (GPL etc) licences. " GPL v2 or later is easiest because that the same licence as most everything else KDE, but CC-BY-SA 3.0 or GPL 3 or later is also possible. Jonathan |

Thanks for clearing that up. I guess the work can now begin. ![]() Thank you ![]() @Jens I wondered something about deviantart: Will the users have to have a deviantart account to submit wallpapers, or will there be another way, too? I'm not sure if people will like the idea of having to register somewhere solely to take part in the contest, but then … there's always something to complain about. |

Sogatori: Ok this is the plan. I will post stuff with my Deviantart account if people don't have one.
Posting here with say links to where it can be downloaded means I will post it there (of course mentioning the person who made it by name) The competition will start next week - prizes are being planned and the idea is this: We will talk about it. I will make certain we get some photographers, illustrators and designers in here from other desktop environments and perhaps even outside of Linux to weigh in and talk if possible about photography and design based on the wallpapers made AND then we will decide. There are a few criteria - we will decide on the three best wallpapers that are good enough to ship as official wallpapers. If none show up, no one will win. I would love for there if two community members could join me in being the "final word jury" essentially weighing in our own opinion AND what we can glean from the discussions here. Sogatori are you up for it? If so, we need to find one more to do it. Then lastly the competition will go on until the beginning of June in which case the doors will close and a choice will be made. The categories are: Photography, Illustration and Abstract and some may fall between the chairs in which case we will simply squeeze it in somewhere. The idea being to go for "the Future" in a positive light. The winner in each category will get the book "Design Elements: a graphic style manual" which is a massive book from Rockport written by Timothy Samara on Design and the underlining thinking of design in several fields. I can't recommend it enough. I will also scour the four corners of the earth to find more prizes and things to give out. I'll do a bigger post about it on monday on the blog. ![]() (and hopefully submit some of my own favorites (that wont be in the competition of course but still)

OK, I have zero issue with GPL v2 but I need to know a few things.
I have a DA account, so I just upload and post a submission link here? Or is there a group that it needs submitted to as well? Never mind; answered.
Is it OK to use the print option that DA provides (to make a little money) or do [you] want the submission to be contest and KDE only? On that note, is it OK to get donations for said contest submission? I never charge for wall papers unless they are a specific request that moneys were agreed upon beforehand. Also never mind on these two. It's too small to sell as a print and no one ever wants to pay for anything I do art wise anyway. ![]() Here are some variations on the same render. http://imgur.com/a/knUiE This is for the abstract part. I know only one, if any will be chosen. I had to use imgur because Deviantart wasn't letting me group them. They are GPL v2. http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-2.0.html (Not entirely sure where to put this.) |
