Have some way of showing the benefits of changes to users?

metzman,

My original intention in starting this thread was to suggest that we should do something to communicate with users in an obvious, clear way about any big changes to programs (the benefits, reasoning behind them etc etc etc..), to hopefully ease the acceptance of that new program, I still believe that's not a bad idea. To me, how that is done, whether it's by better use of the help system, menus, pop-ups or something else is a little irrelevant, but personally i think it should be done.

@ken300

Yes, I agree with you on that. I apologise if I gave you the impression I didn't. :)

Edit: OK scrub that... Just found it. http://userbase.kde.org/Tasks_and_Tools

Does that meant you might be interested in contributing to documentation? That would be wonderful!

I think this is the sort of thing that should be done using the help centre, and, possibly controversially :o , notifications. So the idea would be that on first use of a program, or after a major update a notification would pop up saying, 'First time using blah blah? Take a tour here' (or whatever) with a link or button which opens up the help centre.

My reasoning for using notifications rather than in-program overlays, or popups or whatever, is that you're already used them. It's not going to feel any different; if you're not interested you know that it's going to fade away.

Davidwright,

That sounds like the perfect idea to me :)

No promises, but highly likely. ;)

The current (work) contract I have is now winding down, after which I have every intention of becoming semi-retired. After the initial euphoria of not *having* to work dies down I'll need something to keep the brain cells occupied. Contributing somewhat more actively to the FOSS community seems a good way to go.

Absolutely! It's incredibly fulfilling and tons of fun!
