When I put two windows splitting the screen, the active window shadows the inactive one, and it looks awful

I'd say it's a bit of both. I agree that the shadows should not fall on other windows if they are tiled like this, it doesn't make sense.

I guess what the question means is: Is there a problem with your system running Plasma 4.X that needs fixing, or are you making a design suggestion for Plasma 5? |

Yup, I find that ugly too. I'm not sure what the rule should be though, maybe if window borders are within snapping radius of each other no shadow is drawn or so?
I'm working on the KDevelop IDE.
