I too prefer Kicker to Kickoff by vast margin. I just find Kickoff to be so clumsy and slow with all the sloppy animations on top of it that it is honestly borderline useless. If Kicker could adapt into Plasma theme like Kickoff can, it would be almost perfect.

Kicker's developer/maintainer here. Two notes:

* The name change from "Homerun Kicker" to just "Kicker" (or, well, "Application Menu" as it's named in the widget list) occured because I rewrote it from scratch for Plasma 5, and the Plasma 5 version isn't using the Homerun framework any longer. It's a standalone implementation of the design.

* Regarding making it easier to switch between menus, Plasma 5.1 is adding a new "Alternatives" system: http://sessellift.wordpress.com/2014/07 ... aliiiiive/

I linke kicker and when you promote a New KDE you need some New shiny stuff like kicker.
