[HIG] design for applications

Mon Jul 21, 2014 8:57 pm
hi.

is it possible to habe HIG for applications.

We have guidelines for some toolbars and so on. but would it be possible to habe guidelines for applications as well.

Ehen you read the VDG threads there are some questions from applications Luke muon, amarok, system settings wäre different designes were available at the moment and some design previews for the future. for example:
- Amarok in that threat there was dritten that the APP now usw to much individual elements.
- Muon there was a nice exemple for future design with different colours
- system settings also a New design with a new navigation concept.

why we don't start with a generic app wäre WE wan't to show how the navigation, adjustment oft different elements, color scheme should work.

We (anditosan, EraX and I) are working on a draft for application layout guidelines as we speak. It might not cover everything you mentioned (like colors) but anything to do with designing the layout will be covered by the coming guidelines. :-)

In the next few days, as soon as the draft is ready I'll be posting it here for everyone in the VDG community to take a look and provide feedback before we finalize it and integrate it into the HIG.

From a usability point of view I think those reasons for a layout should rather go the documentation of that specific application. Because every tool has it's own workflow, more or less, how should it be guided in general? You can find some ideas for future guidelines at HIG: Organizational Model but at the moment it's nothing more than buzzwords. And I don't know how to fill it with meaningful content.

If you are interested in the idea behind the HIG, i.e. what Organizational Model means, read this about page.

PS: Actually, VDG is preparing an awesome HIG that fits perfectly in the Organizational Model. You guys are too fast for me :-)

hi

I'm now in vacation so I habe time to think.

I don't want to have a standard design to root them all. I'm thinking abaut:

1. sidebar configuration and design
Ehen you look at different KDE apps the sidebars are very different.
a) no configuration
b) More sidebars grouped to tabs in top
c) grouped to tabs in the side like digikam

the user can change the location linke legt side , right side, grouped, amoung each other, realy flexible, but not in every application.

my wish was a code and design preview for the KDE applications.

code preview:
a sidebar code to usw the full flexibility oft KDE. the user can group, change the location, maybe change the style like the threat viewtopic.php?f=285&t=120006&start=30 was discus. maybe a global setting for all KDE apps was possible in the system settings linke for the toolbar would be possible.

design:
a) standard location for navigation and information. like you can See now in dolphin, digikam, ... navigation legt, information right. if the user want to change the location, no problem because the sidebars are flexible.
b) color Themen for sidebars. maybe the same as the window decoration as you can find in many new layouts in this forum section.
c) design oft grouped sidebars. maybe with the additional focus for mobile usw oft the apps.

I know a lot oft questions and I'm sure the design Team made and make a great job. The text is also for me to remember.

I'm glade that I can talk with you.

Your idea fits very well with the effort alake, EraX and anditosan are currently undertaking. You may want to get in touch with them and discuss your ideas directly with them.
