Tabs in the window decoration

Sat Jul 26, 2014 2:03 am
as you can read in the blog post http://wheeldesign.blogspot.co.at/2014/ ... pears.html EraX made some realy nice tab styles for the window decoration.

when I saw this image I'm thinking like that:
1. cool
2. when you group the apps like in the picture from EraX to a first tab for dolphin you can integrate the menue bar as drop down menue (like firefox)
3. integrate a + symbole and it looks like firefox
4. would it make sence for apps like dolphin, konqueror, okular, kate, ... to put the tabs from the app to the window decoration
5. when you start Gwenview twice you have tabs but the app don't have this "feature".

I know this is not only design, this is also a lot of coding work.

In which direction do you think.

I wonder what happens when the user clicks the overall close button. I guess all apps are closed but what if all have a confirmation dialog like "Save this?", "Are you sure?" etc. On the other hand, when close affects only the actual app it's inconsistent to minimize that apparently works on all apps.

Another question is the behavior of the windows list at the task bar. For instance, I'm using an application with many sub forms grouped together (like Gimp was before 2.x). Will Impress, Writer, and Presentation grouped similarly? I'm curious how this group is named then, perhaps based on the foreground app with some indicator for the group (e.g. "Writer +").

And how do I switch between tabbed apps? Per alt+tab or ctrl+tab which is the default for tab controls. I'd suggest to have both options.

I have to admit that I didn't read all postings on this topic and most concerns may have been solved.

@andreas_k : Remember that these mockups are not about tabs from a single application, but about KWin's feature to group multiple windows in one window as tabs. It's a different concept to e.g. browsers, so the two should not be mixed (having e.g. three tabs from a single browser window plus two tabs of completely different applications in one tab bar would be weird).

@Heiko: The tabbed windows feature isn't new, it already exists in KWin 4 and its features were not changed for KWin 5 as far as I know, so you can tryi t out on a Plasma 4 system.

The issues of closing a window with multiple tabs is already being discussed in the thread about the Breeze window decoration, though we haven't really come to a conclusion there yet.
