I think that could be interesting to integrate this KCM into the section Appearence in System Settings because this makes more sense with the new organization of System Settings in Plasma 5. In the section "Appearence" there are Themes, Styles, Colors, Icons and Fonts; so it makes sense because for many users change the appearence is to change only the wallpaper. Also, for new users it's more logical to look for this KCM in "System Settings" as you do in Windows, Ubuntu and Mac. In addition to the future implementation of megathemes the wallpaper should be absolutely necessary. This KCM should also be able to choose wallpaper according to virtual desktop or activity where we are. I hope this can be made in the future. Can anyone confirm this? Why this should not be so? |

Fully agree: I assume the reason that the wallpaper KCM is currently not in System Settings is a technical one, because there is no reason why users would not look for it here. Just recently, my girlfriend for whom I just installed Plasma was looking for the setting and could not find it without my help. It was nowhere in System Settings but only reachable via the context menu entry "Folder Settings", which did not look like the place to change the wallpaper at all. It's a big usability problem. |

For me the problem with plasma is, I don't know what it is. Is it the Desktop, it it a "normal" app. I don't know.
When it is a normal app, where can I start it and where I can configure it. When it is the Desktop, why I can't configure the desktop in the system settings. I know plasma is high configurabel and with activities, desktops and so on realy feature rich, but when there is a nice plasma system setting area (now there is a theme area for plasma and for all real apps) people also know better what plasma is and how are activities, desktops, ... there are also some plasma related threads. |

The problem we have putting it into System Settings is we have a wallpaper per screen per activity. In order to configure it you'd have to open system settings somehow find your current background in a 2 tier structure of selecting your screen and activity and /then/ change it. Doing that is just a different big usability problem. We need something else a bit more original. |

Nice! Now for me to try and tear it apart Moving the module selection (wallpaper, mouse actions) to the top I'm not comfortable with until it's a global change, not just in the one place; so I'm going to ignore that for now. Mouse Actions: - What would the plus button do? I assume the minus is remove. - We need the configure option still I think. (standard menu uses it) - How would you handle setting actions for extra mice buttons, not just left and right but a 5th button (we can't probe for these at the start I'm afraid) Wallpaper: - We need the layout combo/setting somewhere - We have open from file + download new wallpapers how do you intend to do that? Initial dialog when someone clicks the + - When we're in centred + scale + crop we need to set the background colour |

That's the idea for the new System Settings layout, so that would only be done when the new SySe layout is implemented, of course.
Screw you, you jealous single man! Looks like we need to find you a woman, if that is what you took from the example I provided... [hint: Kids, don't try those kinds of jokes at home, David and I make them about each other all the time so we each know how to take them. If someone else does it, David might actually feel insulted]
You are right, we need to come up with an elegant way of presenting Activity-specific settings within System Settings. We need that not only for Wallpapers, we need it in general, because Activities can only ever live up to their promise if many more settings can be Activity-specific (like for example monitor settings, sound settings or notifications, just to name a few). We currently do have Activity-specific power management settings, but those still leave much room for improvement. I've recently talked to Björn Balazs about that in detail. We've not arrive at a presentable idea yet, but this will definitely be one big topic at Akademy, because we really need it. It's definitely a tricky task, but not impossible. |

I would keep the current idea from the graphocs with the white border around an imae. Mostly because I don't see the page using a background that is white, and also because the borders could have a samll hint of a shadow.

Do you think we can make this with a generic selector (with white borders if needed ) that can also be used on the splash screen selection, look and feed selection, wallpaper selection, SDDM selection etc?

I agree with your proposal. I think the more we use the same ideas on image selection, the more common and tied together the desktop will be. It is always a good principle of design to use continuity or repetition in visual cues. I think it is a challenge or ours as developers and designers to keep a linearity about the KDE desktop. We have to gather all design and development influences from contributors and give sense, purpose and cohesion. So yes, let's apply this to where it makes sense. |

Using the same visualization in the wallpaper selection and the L&F selection was Marco's idea, too.
