The current state of the document is represented by the dot in the middle and the 'Undo' & 'Redo' by the arrows. This is a really quick mockup, it's just supposed to get over the basic idea - ignore any details!

The problem that i can see is how to stop it getting confused with the other forward & back arrows in the toolbar already, maybe smaller 'solid' arrow heads so they don't look like the existing arrows?

I also think it is an interesting idea but would that not call for a widget that is more complicated than a button?

This idea might be a good option if we merged the undo and redo function into one single button.

Maybe by clicking and dragging left or right it would go back and forward in revisions. I imagine this similar to the time-slider in EtherPad.

It's time to prod some serious buttock! ;)

If the metaphor would be changed, this is the one I would prefer. The only issue with the current curved arrow metaphor is that undo and redo can be mixed up. I am not sure it is really an issue because for the redo action to be possible, you had to click undo before. Redo is disabled before clicking on undo. Anyways, this clock metaphor would solve the issue as it would be obvious that counter-clockwise is for going back in time, and clockwise for going forward.

I think there's a clash: history on Android is like this now, same for BB10:

I am all for, it's a mix of what virtually everyone has:

jstaniek,

I think the issue with having curves in the icon was that because of the line thickness used in the rest of the breeze icons, the lines that were perfectly horizontal or vertical appeared sharp & crisp whilst the curves that weren't perfectly horizontal or vertical appeared not as sharp & looked a bit odd. I thought that's why we need to come up with something different that still communicates 'Undo' or 'Redo' with the minimum of non-horizontal or vertical lines.

Someone correct me if i'm wrong :)

Yes that was the issue, the icons I added are curved however but they aren't as jagged as before.

Uri,

if you're happy that there's no problems with the undo & redo icons in this image:

Then they get my vote - why change them to something totally different if there's no need to? Like jstaniek said they're similar to what "virtually everyone has", and they'll be instantly recognizable to everyone.

I glimpsed on that Kate picture and yes there is a problem with just curved icons, they are too similar to next/previous in sense they convey exact same message, just curved. Here is my proposal. Spent less than 5 minutes on Kolourpaint, so obviously just silly drafts.

Image
Undo - go back in time and cross over changes.

Image
Redo - go forward and reintroduce change.

Image
Undo v2 - started thinking if circle in redo is "change committed" then crossing over that circle is perhaps more explanatory.

Why do you think the difference is too small? This difference is used on road signs without problems since (1900?)...
Previous undo/redo icons were like a small rescale of the back/forward icons, now it's clear and the curved arrows of the undo/redo icons like is a globally known concept, the difference being variant of curves.

I have to admit the meaning of the x and circle isn't clear to me, extra element suggests redundancy, and this is not a good sign.

Both are directional arrows and on a global shape, the curve is similar to the arrow (of the other direction).
I doubt that he meant the difference between the undo shape and the redo shape.

I'm unsure which traffic sign you're refering to, though - the shape looks like the one that forbids a U-turn. Turning left/right has only a 90° curve.
Btw. I've no idea about the history of those particualr signs, but they do not predate the 30ies for pretty much sure (and are likely post-war)
