Welp, I've embarrassed myself. Time to leave and never come back again. :P

Nope, you haven't. We should nut just expect people to know our acronyms without them being introduced first.
And don't leave, we still need you ;)

On that note, is there a comprehensive list of terminology somewhere? I'm noticing that I use the wrong terms for plasma, applets, menus, etc.

I don't think there is one, but there should be. Actually, even the Plasma team uses some terms inconsistently (I'm not even sure if it's really used consistently in the UI...). I think the most problematic one is Plasmoids/Widgets/Applets, which are often, but not necessarily always used synonymously.

As an applett this should currently look like something like that:

Is there some functionality that could be integrated there? Since many people do not like a preview, but an applet could allow more than actually only changing the layout, could we add a bit of other useful stuff like quickly changing the preference? e.g. move some layout up in the priority list?

Kdeuserk,

Personally i wouldn't add anything to that, it's spot on - nice, simple & clean.

If a link directly to the keyboard part of system setting wasn't in the right click menu for the layout switcher then a button or something for that might be worth adding but otherwise i like it as it is! Oh, and the text size of the bits that you click on might benefit from being a little bigger to increase the click-able area but not if they then look out of place with the other bits in the system tray.

In all mockups there is already a link. ;) (See the configure button right to "Keyboard Layout", under the pin button). Maybe I should make it bigger.

Kdeuserk,

Sorry, i'd assumed that they were a pair of arrows to switch between panes - i hadn't noticed that they were infact sliders to show 'click this & you'll go the SySe'- apologies!

The choices in the applet could perhaps have a bit bigger font, and a visual indication of which choice is currently selected would be nice.

And is that configure button easily recognizable as a button?

Since i like systray icon with the letters in a rectangle i would suggest using these pictures instead of the parentheses.

So, instead of
English (us)

it looks like
[US] English

(square brackets indicating the system tray pictures)

Yes, that makes sense!

next to the header (Keyboard layout) it would be nice to have the Keyboard layout icon on the left side, so that you also recognize the icon from the panel in the plasmoid. It would also fit to the settings icon on the right side.

These are both good ideas, we should do them IMHO:

Have square brackets like Saabhero just suggested + an indicator of the currently active layout like veqz suggested :)

What's about adding the original name?

[FA] Farsi (زبان فارسی)
(It's a mix of LTR and RTL; therefore English at first position)

About the whitespace: I'd still appreciate the keyboard preview, just for the joy of use.

As an English speaker only, it's nice to have the 'English', 'Finnish' etc at the start of the lines so that it's obvious at a glance which line is which. If we have:

[FA] Farsi (زبان فارسی)

That would make the English word 'Farsi' harder to pick out at a glance. If i really did speak Farsi though it would be much quicker to pick out the bit that said Farsi in the Farsi language rather than having to mentally translate everything into English so i think it's a good idea to have both languages.

Would it work to have the '[FA]' right justified like in the Gnome screenshot in the first post then have:

Farsi (زبان فارسی)_____________[FA]

Note - there should be a white space in the line above between 'Farsi (زبان فارسی)' and '[FA]' but for some reason it's not being displayed when i hit 'submit' so i've had to replace the spaces with '_' they should just be spaces though!

To make the list of layouts more readable at a glance for everyone?

Grumpy Maintainer Time.
If this is going to be in 5.1 it has to be merged and working by Thursday.

Otherwise it'll have to wait to 5.2.
