The point was to keep it a bit ambiguous actually. I just thought of "inspire" as the brand. It could just as well have been "Rottman&Kreyzig", "Orange", "Eurasia", or any other proper noun. "Elegance" work fine too... I guess. I chose "Inspire" as giving allusions of great software which will inspire users to create more awesome stuff, or that this work has been inspired by our (KDE) desires and wishes to create great software, or just that "Inspire" sounds like a positive word with lots of possible fluff around it. Ideally "inspire" should have a font which differs more from the "of KDE" part, but I just put this together in KolourPaint and only changed the text size. A more different font would make it more obvious that it's a one-word proper noun, and not a sentence. I put in "of KDE" behind it to signal that the brand "Inspire" comes from KDE. "by KDE" would not work if the brand should be able to fit on software made outside of KDE (say, a Gnome developer which wants his application to fit perfectly into Plasma). "for KDE" would be even more limiting, as that would suggest the applications are only suitable in Plasma - or "KDE" as people would call it.
I'd choose to deemphasize the KDE-part more, as that might make people think these applications should only run on "KDE" (which will still be the popular name for Plasma for the time being). As for the code quality criteria: The code itself might not need to be perfect, but the applications we give this stamp to must be maintained. We can't run around with "These are the best KDE applications around" and then have half of them being unmaintained and buggy! |

Oooooooh, so you meant it more like those fragrance brands? Sorry, I didn't get that from the logo at all, I read it more like a sentence. But then, I think "by KDE" is cooler, because that's what the fragrance brands say. And it needs a period in between. "Inspire. By KDE." If we then make it look a bit (but not enough for a lawsuit, of course) like the Calvin Klein fragrance brand logos, it would be pretty cool |

"Inspire" reminds me on Microsoft or Apple (we should take care about copyright infringements)
"Elegance" isn't that Enlightment "Simple" that's Gnome (someone has to be grumpy, sorry) "Showcase" has some reference to fashion "Essentials" is a Microsoft brand "Made for Plasma" goes to wrong way "kfplapps5" brings it to the point "KDE Premium" (or Selection) and "KDE Diamond/Platinum/Gold/Silver/Coal" (both by veqz) sounds okay to me, however a little bit boring |

Elegance has been the main motto for Plasma 1. Maybe Enlightenment uses it too, but if we are copying them, then we have been copying them for years. |

I'm pretty sure MS or Apple doesn't have a copyright on any "Inspire" brand... At least, a quick google search didn't reveal anything.

There's Acer Inspire, although that's hardware, not software.
Also HTC Inspire, but that's discontinued. |

One thing to consider - we might be better off choosing a name that will work in both these situatons:
1 - in a graphical setting, so a logo that appears 'stamped' on, for example a web page promoting the applications 2 - in a text-only setting so that these applications can easily be identified when using text-only package managers like YAST - when people are making rushed decisions about what package to install and they'll know that 'oh, this is one of those designed for KDE programs, simple but powerful' I'll go for that one! My own opinion - i like the 'Elegance' brand - I know that it's got history but it fits in with "Simple by default, powerful when needed" ('Elegance' to me conjures up ideas that a bit of software is stylish, uncluttered, intuitive and easy to use, exactly what were aiming for). In text-only situations I think names like 'Elegance Mail', 'Elegance Image', 'Elegance Video' etc. etc. work well for distinguishing them from the long list of other applications that might be displayed in most package managers - and you could just do a search for 'Elegance' and you'd find all of them in one go. |

My only criticism of Elegance is that its too... "much". Like "By KDE" it sounds like we're making a perfume for elderly ladies of the upper middle classes. The ideal is to have a word that inspires elegance, beauty or whatever we want. Not one that states it. Something with a bit of boldness to it that doesn't need to tell you that "this is really nice" but instead implies that it is and "if you don't get that you're doing it wrong".
Think of words that inspire elegance - frost, smooth, shimmer...

Jens, you're a genius -- even if you don't realize it! By putting together the words "inspire" and "elegance" in your post you created the winning tagline:
Inspires Elegance On a serious note, words/ideas that inspire elegance: Curiosity Ambition Vision Resolve Ideals Spirit Going back a bit, another possibility is to emphasize the aspect that the set of applications should be (or at least I think it should be) "core applications" that almost everyone needs and are an integral part of the desktop experience -- and they have to be top notch for that reason. A nice word for that could be Cornerstones |

One added complication - I'm assuming that whatever word we pick as our 'brand' (whether it's elegence, or any of the other suggestions), unless it's going to be translated for different non-english languages, we'll need to consider what that word means in other languages. We don't want to put loads of thought into choosing the perfect name to give the impression of sophistication if when translated into a non-english language it becomes 'Rubbish mail' or the 'Rubbish Image Viewer' or 'Rubbish by KDE'

How about 'Harmony'? (If it hasn't been suggested already that is)
I also like it because there is such a thing as a Harmonic gear. And, you know, gears n' stuff and KDE seem to go well together. I'm still not really sure of this direction though, as I believe that the software should be able to stand on it's own merit and not be 'gold starred'. |

Harmony sounds nice, but I would perhaps try to look for something a bit more dynamic (harmony sounds like something that is perfect as it is, and doesn't invite interaction).
We could, instead of making claims about the quality, just create an idea of a well-thought set of core applications that have received special attention and work well together. A plasma desktop would not be complete without these applications (note also that we are talking about desktop here, not active/mobile apps). That was behind my suggestions 'Desktop Essentials' and 'Cornerstones'. |
