Tasks for Google Code-In

Thu Oct 23, 2014 11:23 pm
Hi everyone, we need your brainstorming help!
For those of you who don't know about it yet, Google Code-In is a contest organized by Google that has teenagers complete mentored tasks for open source projects to introduce them into our world and hopefully get at least some of them hooked to open source software contribution. It's basically a very much scaled-down version of Gooogle Summer of Code.

As in the previous years, KDE will be applying again as a mentoring organization for GCI. There are the following categories of tasks:
  • Code: Tasks related to writing or refactoring code
  • Documentation/Training: Tasks related to creating/editing documents
    and helping others learn more
  • Outreach/Research: Tasks related to community management,
outreach/marketing, or studying problems and recommending solutions
  • Quality Assurance: Tasks related to testing and ensuring code is of
    high quality
  • User Interface: Tasks related to user experience research or user
    interface design and interaction

As you can imagine, we are still short of tasks in the last category, because developers most easily come up with tasks in the other categories.

Each task should take a high-schooler no more than 3-5 hours of work to complete. Other than that, there are pretty much no restrictions.
Some examples of tasks I've set up in previous GCI's (notice that the 3-5hrs limit did not apply in the previous years, so most of these tasks would probably have to be split into a set of smaller tasks this year):
  • Determining which KDE desktop applications would make sense to have on a mobile device
  • Finding usability problems in the applications shipping with Plasma Active
  • Checking an application for violation of the HIG and suggesting fixes

We can do similar tasks again, but what I'd like to see are also more design-oriented tasks. I think many of you have quite a good feel for what one can accomplish in 3-5 hours by now, so just shoot your ideas!
It can be for Plasma or for any KDE application. Theoretically, we can do any tasks for any application since they would not produce code, but since we'd of course like to see the results implemented at some point, it would of course be good to have developer buy-in for the tasks.

One caveat: We also need people to mentor the students. That does not mean that if you suggest a task, you also have to mentor it (since the tasks are quite small one mentor can mentor several tasks), but if we end up with a dozen tasks but no mentor, we have a problem.

We need the ideas as soon as possible, so get brainstormin' ;)

Further info can be found here

Looking forward to your ideas
