Oooh one other short term option beyond moving the toolbox to the right and show/hide depending on the presence of a panel is:
  • De-conflict overlaps the same way we do when two different plasmoids potentially overlap each other in Plasma 5.

So basically, just like when the placement of the folder plasmoid potentially overlaps with another plasmoid we resize/move it, we do the same when it overlaps with the desktop toolbox. That way no matter where the toolbox is, no plasmoid will overlap it and it matches an existing behavioral model already present. Personally I think either this or the show/hide solution are the best short term solutions for Plasma 5.

Indeed. My order of preference would be
1. Hide unless there is no panel
2. Move it out of the way automatically
3. Move it to the right

With the lower ones in the order only as alternatives if the higher ones aren't feasible with reasonable effort.

I agree entirely. I'll provide this feedback on the bug report.

Not all options are available in the panel menu. If you want to keep the "not only available in the context menu" rule, we need alternate ways to access:

Desktop Settings - This configures that desktop on that monitor on that activity. Mostly the wallpaper, but also the type.
Activities - shows the sidebar on the left
Show Dashboard - activates the dashboard

Indeed David. We discussed these specific desktop toolbox actions and ideas for how they might be exposed earlier in the thread starting with this comment. :-)
