Where to put your assets

Wed Nov 05, 2014 1:54 pm
We (the VDG) now have an official place to put our assets (mockups, toolkits, documents, etc.):
https://share.kde.org/

You can login there using the same credentials that you are using here in the forum, if you cannot log in or cannot upload anything, that means you are not part of the VDG group on Identity yet. In that case, please write me a PM and I will get you added to it.

All assets which we work on collaboratively should be put in the shared folder "Visual Design Group Share". Within that folder, please use the following folder hierarchy and file naming scheme:

  • public; polished work meant for public sharing, read-only of course. Meant for most work we'll be doing; we should expect anything in this folder to wind up in the public eye.

    • software; for everything to do with UI.
      • Project; name formatted "(desktop|app)-(applicationType)-(camelCaseProjectName)", I.e. "desktop-plasmoid-dateTimeFlipClock" or "app-productivity-kOffice"
        • Filename; name formatted "(camelCaseProjectName)-(camelCaseDescription)-(someRevisionNumber)-(identity)", I.e. "kOffice-newIcons-2.3-uri"
    • promo; Anything people will use to promote KDE; from websites to videos.
      • Project; name formatted "(mediaType)-(camelCaseProjectName)", I.e. "website-okular" or "video-coolPromoVideos"
        • Filename; name formatted "(camelCaseProjectName)-(camelCaseDescription)-(someRevisionNumber)-(identity)", I.e. "coolPromoVideos-kde5.1Release-4.1.2-vdgvictim"
    • brainstorming; When it's unofficial; as in, the project hasn't even asked us to work on it. Either that, or it just doesn't fit either software or promo
      • Project; name formatted "(camelCaseProjectName)", I.e. "kdeComputerStickers"
        • Filename; name formatted "(camelCaseProjectName)-(someDescription)-(someRevisionNumber)-(identity)", I.e. "kdeComputerStickers-monoTone-1.1-mrmagoo"

  • private; the designs may be too early, developers might want designs kept quiet for some reason, but we need to wait before moving any of these to the public folders. Folders are mirrored with public. This way we can just move things to their same spots in the relevant folders.

    • software; for everything to do with UI.
      • Project; name formatted "(desktop|app)-(applicationType)-(camelCaseProjectName)", I.e. "desktop-plasmoid-dateTimeFlipClock" or "app-productivity-kOffice"
        • Filename; name formatted "(camelCaseProjectName)-(camelCaseDescription)-(someRevisionNumber)-(identity)", I.e. "kOffice-newIcons-2.3-uri"

    • promo; Anything people will use to promote KDE; from websites to videos.
      • Project; name formatted "(mediaType)-(camelCaseProjectName)", I.e. "website-okular" or "video-coolPromoVideos"
        • Filename; name formatted "(camelCaseProjectName)-(camelCaseDescription)-(someRevisionNumber)-(identity)", I.e. "coolPromoVideos-kde5.1Release-4.1.2-vdgvictim"

    • brainstorming; The crack the VDG is smoking
      • Project; name formatted "(camelCaseProjectName)", I.e. "kdeComputerStickers"
        • Filename; name formatted "(camelCaseProjectName)-(someDescription)-(someRevisionNumber)-(identity)", I.e. "kdeComputerStickers-monoTone-1.1-mrmagoo"
[/list]

Please copy/move all assets you already have created elsewhere (in or outside share.kde.org) and which you think should be available to the group to work with into that shared folder and put all new assets directly there.
That way, we have all our stuff at one place and accessible to all of us.

How I can show files in a preview from the share.kde.org page
when you look at theis post from alake, the icons are shown only in chrome (In firefox you don't see anything) and only when you logged in.
viewtopic.php?f=285&t=124463#p327821

I used my dropbox files (linked to share.kde.org) to show the preview. There they are in the public folder where everyone can see the files with the link. than put the link into a '[thumb=][/thumb]' work realy good. how can I make this with the share.kde.org files?

Thank you for asking that question!
It is possible to create direct links to images from ownCloud, but unfortunately it's not very straightforward, so here is how you do it:
  1. Go to your mockup
  2. Click "Share" -> "Share link"
  3. Open the generated link
  4. On the bottom of that page find the "Direct link"
  5. Paste that URL into the "thumb" tag and you can embed your image into the forum.

Yes I know that's a bit cumbersome but please do that instead of making us dependent on Dropbox.

What exactly do you mean? The instructions above are for share.kde.org files, so at which point do you have difficulties?

Is this actually being used?

I think it’s a brilliant idea, but a vast majority of the pictures I see on the forums are hosted by completely random image hosts, many even temporary.

Maybe it would make sense to politely ask everyone who posts a picture, to please put it on share.kde.org …at least until this idea embeds itself in everyone’s minds.

I do, at least for the mockups. However, sharing images via owncloud is a mess compared to other services. I didn't manage recently to include an image with the right size into a blog post.

I have the same problem with include the image into the forum. I don't want to show only the link. Show the image is much more visible. Maybe we can find an solution for that because also other users want to do it.

And for my icon work it is not necessary because I put all into the kde repository.

Please read the instructions in my first comment on this thread. Those should work.

http://imgur.com/PRDacEX (Annoyances start with limited image size here without the ability to thumbify directly, but that's another topic)
The direct link https://share.kde.org/index.php/s/ZmA91iyMSL93fPi gives an error 500. When I open the image at share.kde and right-click this cloud-preview to "show the image" I get https://share.kde.org/index.php/core/pr ... orceIcon=0, which works but not without the x/y parameters.

What works for me though is using the direct download link: https://share.kde.org/index.php/s/ZmA91 ... i/download and putting in inside the thumb tag:

e.g.
Code: Select all
[thumb=300]https://share.kde.org/index.php/s/ZmA91iyMSL93fPi/download[/thumb]

produces:

… I agree that this is not entirely user-friendly though.

Now that you point to this function I see it also in the toolbar ;-).

Having an Owncloud repository sounds like a great idea. But I'm not actually able to login with my KDE identity... :'(

On a similar note, from what I can tell I’m still not part of the VDG oC group (user: matijasuklje)

BTW, kudos on updating to oC 8.2! :D
