"Close" symbol

Wed Nov 12, 2014 9:25 am
Hi,
Kudos, the Breeze icon theme is getting richer every week!

A small picky question about consistency: window-close and project-development-close use "X" while view-related icons use "-":

Image

If you ask me, in the theme's language I'd reserve "-" for removal (element from a list, a set, etc.), and "X" for closing/hiding.

How would splitting and unsplitting look like then? Closing the split view with an X is okay but how to illustrate split?
Other than making the icon less recognizeable by just having a split box without a plus.

Good question. I think "+" would be still ok.

PS: Not only "X" is a symbol for closing windows and projects but also for tabs (tab-close*). So view is in the same family: containers.

I'd like to also ask if we want to use "X" for document-close (uses "-" now).

My logic with the "-" was that when you first click on the button you add a new view and when you click again you remove it thus the + and - signs.

This uses the "x" as the other icons.

This also another way of representing what's getting removed or closed. This is used on the edit-table-X icons.

Doesn't this one go a bit better with the whole style of the Breeze theme though. IMHumbleO it feels a bit cleaner & more 'spacious' than the other one with more 'room to breathe'!

I personally think that having a little symbol showing which side will be closed (whether it's a 'x' or a '-') makes it a little more obvious what's going to happen when you click on that button, I don't think the one with the three lines on the pane to be removed, is quite as obvious - it doesn't really convey to me that 'clicking on this will close the left pane' - it's still OK though, just not quite as good as the one above.

Yep, without the color, the /// lines wouldn't be as clear. I am perfectly OK with x too.

I too think the 'x' works better. The shaded area doesn't make it obvious that it's about closing the shaded panel.
