First of all, I want to say that what VDG group achieved in the last year is pretty amazing. One missing piece was the window decoration, which is done now, so we have a complete visual set. Of course, I do understand that it is just the beginning. Now our job should be to show all this great work to the world. Plasma 5 announcement is a good way to do so. I would like to propose a special section in the Plasma 5.2 announcement, something like "Plasma 5.2 visual tour", with the Plasma 5.2 screenshots, where we can show the best aspects of the KDE workspace (plasma breeze theme, qt breeze style, icons and so on). This way we can demonstrate the strength of Plasma - great look in a modern form and the important role of KDE VDG in all this work. What do you think? Please share your comments/opinions.

I'm all in for promoting Plasma. Though in my opinion we should push for the "let's promote Plasma" aspect a whole lot more, besides the announcements.

Yes, absolutely! But do we have a list of favourite features? I mean is there a particular application or just a workflow beyond the Breeze design that could be shown in a video rather than a screenshot?

A well-done video is of course the crown of promo material. GNOME is awesome in that department, for example, but their videos look so professional that I suspect someone may be paid to produce them (that's just a guess, though). So if we produce a promo video, it should be produced and edited professionally. Someone just recording a screencast and talking a bit about what it shows is nice for showing stuff to each other within KDE, but if we use it for promo, we probably need more than that. |

I agree, announcement is just the start. I have a few more ideas to share later
I think that I have a good candidate to show. What about viewtopic.php?f=285&t=122869 I know that vHanda is working on it http://quickgit.kde.org/?p=koko.git
Yes, making a promo video is much more complicated than just taking a few screenshots and this is why I think we should focus on "pretty pictures" for now. Of course if someone wants to make the video, I do not see any problem But first things first so let collect the list of the things we want to show. |

The most relevant aspects to me are: * Elegant (Breeze style for Plasma, taskbar with new clipboard plasmoid) * Simple by default, powerful when needed (Kate) * Consistent look and feel (Dolphin) * Configurability (System settings) * Innovative technologies (Baloo, KWin animation) * Connectivity (KTp, KDEConnect) |

Ok here are my points:
* Breeze dark ( plasma theme etc), some people asked about it in comments to Plasma 5.2 beta announcement * KDE homerun (classic menu) * Koko as a glimpse/preview of the future plasma applications * A few screenshots with different wallpapers http://wheeldesign.blogspot.com/2014/06 ... nners.html to diversify the view I will try to take some screenshots this weekend and post them here for the review |

If this is going to be a video about Plasma 5.2, it makes sense to restrict it to only things that are in Plasma 5.2, I don't think we could mention Koko nor kdeconnect.

Over on this thread - viewtopic.php?f=285&t=122926&start=90, they're talking about branding for a new set of core apps and it seems as though Breeze will be part of that branding (Breeze Image Viewer, Breeze Video Player etc).
When promoting 5.2 it might be a good idea to emphasise that Breeze is KDE's new highly polished design & usability philosophy & make sure that it is comes across in the video (or whatever the promo will be) how great it is - maybe not by having big words on the screen 'doesn't it look nice' but rather by making sure that it's shown at its best & people recognise that this great style etc.. is what Breeze is all about. That way people wil already start to be aware that Breeze = KDE = great visual design = great usability, so that if Breeze apps are created then some of the ground work for promoting them & getting across to people that Breeze = KDE = great visual design = great usability, will already have started. If however these Breeze apps don't happen then we haven't lost anything |

Time for an update
So here is my "first" attempt at making the promo video of Plasma 5.2. The video consists of three parts. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r0hBNZ4 ... e=youtu.be 1. Desktop Effects to show how fluid the interface is and to catch the attention. 2. Dark breeze plasma theme, system tray, logut and lock screen, KDE homerun/classic menu because they show the elegance of Breeze visual style. 3. New "undo" feature, alternatives menu and krunner to present the flexibility of Plasma as a user interface. Of course these are rather subjective choices but I think the final result is pretty good. Comments/opinions welcome |

Looked great!
A bit much back and forth at some point though, but nothing problematic. And while this is completely subjective, it would have looked nicer if everything was in one part, instead of doing the fade-outs and fade-ins between each part. I especially liked all the colours from the pictures you had opened in the example windows. It's not special in any way, but colours are always pretty. |

It's too long IMHO. You lost me at the overwhelming transition/animation part, which are in turn too fast. An improvement could be to put headlines more in front maybe as an introduction of what comes now. In total the clip should not exceed 2mins. And the background music does not convey the idea of simplicity and elegance (I had the picture of David's mustache in mind). How about using some piece of Eric Satie or Philip Glass? |

Agree to both: The text should be more prominent and maybe a bit more informative. Currently it tells what's shown, but it should also tell what's why it's shown (i.e. what's cool about it). If you need input for that, I'm sure this fine group here can help with some nice promotional text
To avoid the video being taken down by Youtube on behalf of some music publisher, we'll have to make sure it's freely-licensed. |
