[Idea] Integrated dropdown terminal

Thu Mar 19, 2015 4:41 pm
Since Yakuake is one of KDE's favorite apps, wouldn't it be nice to have it, or something like it, integrated into plasma, like krunner, playing nice with the plasma theme? Maybe the amount of work that would imply is not worth it, when Yakuake works perfectly fine, but I thought I would mention it. Even with the breeze themes, it doesn't feel particularly integrated.

it doesn't feel particularly integrated.

Because?
Krunner is a process of its own, so there's no technical discrimination.
Maybe you could elaborate why you think it's not "integrated" or how it could be integrated better?

Sure. Here is a screenshot:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BzSEgM ... sp=sharing

Tabs in Yakuake look like no other tab in the breeze theme. The "X" to close tabs is usually on the tab, not on the other side of the screen. The window decoration doesn't follow Plasma's window decoration settings. In fact I find it superfluous, since it doesn't add more information, and the three buttons on it could be placed elsewhere. IMO the X to close Yakuake is not needed, and in any case it could close when you close the last tab. The hamburger menu could be placed where the X to close tabs currently is. The pin button could be next to the hamburger menu's new place.

I would try to make it look more like a part of the plasma desktop than a window. Similar to krunner, add widgets, activities...

I don't know if this helps, or is at all possible, but these issues make it look a little out of place to me. That said, I really like the app, and use it every day.

What about something along these lines?

Is that just a mockup? Looks amazing either way. I would kill for a yakuake theme just like that.

Yes, unfortunately it's just a mockup. I lack the knowledge and the time to do this. I hope someone likes it and wants to do the work, because I also would like to see a better integrated yakuake.

look good but you can do - not all - a nice theme with yakuake as well see my blog post. There you have everything you need to make a theme. not more work than making a mockup.

The biggest "problem" is that yakuake has no integration of the tabbar and the feature button(s)

See
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=222538
and
https://blogs.kde.org/2014/02/17/yakuak ... yland-more

Eike suggested to move to QML theming, not sure whether that's actually required/a good idea and yakuake should not "just" use a stock QTabBar + a corner widget (the burger button) to be less "special" looking...

Thanks! I don't think I'll be able to in the near future. I have so much going on right now. I am a musician, and between practising, teaching, going to lessons (I am still in school) I am working 12 hour days almost on a regular basis. When I get back home, I just want to relax. Besides, I don't quite see the point, since I won't be able to add a close button to each tab, and I won't be able to merge the two bars into one like in my mockup. I think your theme looks as nice as it gets with the current status of yakuake. I might change the scrollbar (but maybe that's not possible) and remove the close and maybe the pin buttons. My hopes for the application is that it feels like a part of plasma, like a widget.

Thats open source if you have time and would like to do something, make it. If not, you don't have to justify why not.

:-) have a nice day.

Thanks! You too! I just don't want to come here empty handed asking for stuff. If I find the time I'll do it, but the current situation is very limiting, and not much can be improved from your theme before other issues are resolved.

I would love to see a Breeze theme bundled with Yakuake.

The ones by andreas_k look good (adopted one of them already) and can be a good start!
