Feedback on poster for FISL 2015

Fri Jul 03, 2015 11:52 am
Hi there,

We're preparing a poster for our booth at FISL this year, but we aren't quite sure about the artwork
we came up with. It'd be great if the VDG could give some feedback about it.

The current artwork is available at: http://ibin.co/27LyuPeMJD94

We are a little bit in a hurry :), so I'd be grateful if some advice could be given by this Sunday.
If you need the SVG file, just let me know.

Thanks in advance,

I only have a few suggestions for you:
  1. Remove the http:// from the address. It adds no information as most modern browsers should autocomplete this part. If you want to be modern and hip you might also consider adding a QR with the address in it. Though that's absolutely not necessary
  2. Instead of a black bar with the URL in it, you should consider using a scrim i.e. a gradient from to top down to about where the text ends. Don't make it too dark. The less you notice it's there the better. It should range from about 20%-40% – 0% Opacity.
  3. Font usage: Be careful here. Different fonts evoke different emotions and associations (google "font psychology" if you want to learn more). Sans-serif fonts like the one you have choosen are usually associated with stability and honesty. However, if you use the bold version too much, if can come over as pushy and obtrusive. Also keep in mind that different font styles guide the eye. Right now the focus is much more on the URL and "the beauty of", because of the bold font style and the contrast between the black background and the white text. I noticed that you wanted to counter this effect by making the "our dreams" part orange. But the contrast between orange and black is smaller than the one of black vs. white. Additionally the thin/regular variant of the font you use does not draw the attention to itself nearly as much as the bold one. You might want to consider changing the colour or size of the text. It's also okay to use a bigger size for the "our dreams" part. Fiddle around and see what you like.
  4. Colour: Be sure not to use too many different colour in your poster. As a rule of thumb not more than 3-5. Don't overdo the accent colour. As another rule of thumb, the bolder the colour (orange, red, bright green etc.) you use for the background the less colours overall should be used. For example, if you'd use a bright orange as your background colour, you should only use another colour for your text and graphics. Also keep in mind that the colour choice evoke different emotions and associations too.
  5. Wallpaper. I feel like using the current plasma default wallpaper is a no-no here. It has too many bright colours and movement going on in it (the different shapes that seem to "fall"). The important thing here is that it was not made to be used in this context. A computer wallpaper should be nice to look at, however, it is often covered with windows and it's not its job to ensure that information on top of it. And you have not other surface like a window to paint your information onto. So my recommendation would be to search for something else here. If you find a picture you like you can use the colour picker and extract a few colours you like to use on your texts/graphics. if you do not find something picture like that's no problem too. A plain background is nothing to be ashamed of! In fact, less can be more. Just make sure you find a colour palette you like.
  6. Focus: Be sure to not overload the poster with different colours, fonts and forms. Right now it's a bit difficult to find out where the focus it supposed to be. On the graphic with the KDE logo? The URL on top? The wallpaper in the background or the slogan in the lower left. Focus is a complex matter that is affected by colour, font and positioning of the individual objects. First make sure what is important and what is not. The more important something is, the bigger and brighter/contrast rich it should be. The inverse is true for the less important things. If something does not add to the message you want to convey, throw it out.
I hope this helps

I'm going to ask first of all, where's the poster going to be used? e.g. is it going to be printed or just digital. If it's printed what are the dimensions you're going to use it?.

Sogatori, thanks a lot for the hints. I'll try to come up with an improved version based on your recommendation.

Uri_Herrera, the poster is intended to be printed out in a 1,40m x 2,00m size.

Hi Uri_Herrera,

Yes, it's pretty good, we would have only to substitute FISL for Flisol :)
As I mentioned before we were a little in a hurry because FISL begins tomorrow (Wednesday) and we ended up printing out the konqi-based poster I've sent in this thread.
We will keep your poster for any future need, though.

Thanks for help,
