System Tray icons are too big

Wed Jul 29, 2015 5:23 am
Hi,

I feel like system tray icons are too big and in general icons shouldn't follow the size of the panel. With my current panel size system tray icons are taking up as much as 30% or more of panel space on a 1366x768 screen.

Thanks.

I totally agree.
I hope very much that this situation will change in future.

I also understand that the designers and developers can't do all in one time.
But I must say: at the moment the system tray of KDE 4 looks far more elegant.

I also don't like the coloured mini-icons in the plasma 5 system-tray. They draw too
much attention in my opinion. I prefer them with far less colours.
Keep up the good work!

What are the mini-icons?

As far as Plasma is concerned they provide monochromatic icons. It's the 3rd party devs who are not active can create a mix of monochromatic and colored system tray.

With mini-icons I mean: the icons in the sytem-tray.
At the moment I find them much too big.

I know no other system that displays icons in the system-tray that big.
And I think there really is no reason to do so.

b.t.w., when I look at the screenshot you yourself placed in the first message of this thread I see a few coloured icons. But I don't think that any of them are made by "third party" devs, don't you?
I can be mistaking....

Yes, there is no reason for them to be as tall as the panel. At least 30-40% of my panel width is occupied by system tray icons because they are so big.

I would really like the panel to conform to width that makes sense on real devices. For example, on Android Google recommends each icon be at least 48x48 pixels so that it can be easily pressed by fingers. In Plasma we like to give power to users where it is not necessary and creates unintended consequences in real world. Unity bar is also fixed size. So is Gnome if I am not wrong.

KeePassX, Chrome, CopyQ, etc. are all 3rd party apps.

To save horizontal space, I increase the height of the panel: viewtopic.php?f=285&t=124799&start=15#p349455 Would that help in your case?

That is a good suggestion. I noticed that too only a short while ago. It helps. The icons in the systemtray go in two rows and that makes it much better.
Thank you anyway for the good suggestion.

In order to get that you have to make the panel extra wide. This looks too wide on a 14" screen.

I think the perfect height for me is this. Icons are perfect square in this case. I like how the actual task manager icons are big and aren't shrouded in excessive empty space around them. They occupy the full square icon space. The clock is also not too big. Only the system tray icons are extremely big.

I hear they rewrote the systemtray software for plasma 5.5. Hopefully it gets better.
I still didn't have the opportunity to check that out.

I'm very happy that the system tray icons are now 16px or 22px and don't grow like the app icons. in addition if you need some system tray icons, please let me know. owncloud icons are still in kde:breeze-icons master and work quite well.

A new ownCloud icon would be very nice. Most icons are solid or have something inside them. The current ownCloud icon is an empty cloud and ownCloud status in the corner. That makes it look out of place. Something in-line with other icons would be really appreciated.

I still feel like they are too big, I mean they are bigger than the task manager icons: https://imgur.com/j1rcNeP, which looks really odd. Yes you can make them smaller by making the Taskbar smaller to a point where the System Tray Icons suddenly snap and get smaller, which looks much better: https://imgur.com/CyK4Mqb

I see you are using plasma 5. Then it's easy to solve:
https://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=289&t=131736 this works great!
This is what it boils down to:
- Make a file (using e.g. kate) with this content (read further below the quote).

function alignedSize(suggestedsize) {

var resultingsize = suggestedsize;

if (suggestedsize < 14) {
//do nothing
} else if (suggestedsize < 22) {
resultingsize = 16;
} else if (suggestedsize < 24) {

resultingsize = 20;
} else if (suggestedsize < 48) {
resultingsize = 22;
} else if (suggestedsize < 64) {
resultingsize = 24;
//if size is more than 64, leave as is
}

return resultingsize;
}

- save this file as Layout.js and
- copy this file to /usr/share/plasma/plasmoids/org.kde.plasma.systemtray/contents/code/
- (on ubuntu (like) systems: sudo cp Layout.js /usr/share/plasma/plasmoids/org.kde.plasma.systemtray/contents/code/ .
- Reboot or restart plasma and it looks as it should.
