I just noticed this, and thought I'd put it out there because I think it can be improved. It seems to me that Breeze's zoom-out icons (zoom-out, zoom-out-x, x-zoom-out, et al.) don't actually make any sense. If you look at the zoom-in icons, for comparison, you can see that there is an arrow pointing from a "small" box out towards a "large" box - it's clearly suggesting the action is to make the small thing bigger. The zoom-out icons, though, also have an arrow pointing from a "small" box out to a "large" box. The only thing that differentiates them from the zoom-in icons is a rotation of 180 degrees, but why should the orientation of the icon have any meaning for a zoom operation? If you look at the icon without already having learned which way it should be facing, the suggestion - zooming in, when it should suggest zooming out - is the same! (I'd bet you could swap zoom-in and zoom-out icons and practically no-one would notice.)
The obvious solution as I see it is to change the direction of the arrows on the zoom-out action icons, so that the arrow points from the "big" box in towards the "smaller" box. I hope this suggestion is taken seriously, and thanks for the great work! |

I think we're meant to imagine the arrows as going in to or out of the screen. Like the direction the "camera" will move.

That's an interesting hypothesis, but I think that idea has the same problem: what is there to indicate the "camera direction" in or out of the screen? With the Breeze icons as flat and abstract as they are, there isn't anything I can see to tell me, as a user, that "arrow pointing down and to the left" is supposed to mean "away from the viewer" and "same arrow but pointing up and to the right" means "towards the viewer".

Uri made New zoom icons for 5.5 so do you talk about the zoom icons from 5.5 or the older ones.

I managed to find the new ones in here: https://projects.kde.org/projects/kde/workspace/breeze/repository/revisions/master/show/icons/actions/24 (seems I was looking at an older mirror when I tried to check earlier). Wouldn't you know it, the alterations for 5.5 do address the exact issue I was describing of the 5.4 icons. Wonderful! Apologies for the noise. (Darn time-travelling devs fixing problems before I've raised them! ![]() |

The same thing was bothering me, glad to hear that it's already been fixed.
