The second thing I still am mulling over is something I discussed with Deevad in regards to the mypaint shade selector: It now supports HSL, HSI, and HSY' in addition to HSV.
However, we noticed that there's a big flaw in the selector: It's nearly impossible to select the complementary colour in it!
So here's some design ideas for a different layout: The blue numbers are the dimensions in which the selected colour is transformed.
1. This column goes from saturation=100% for the current colour, at top, and then decreases downward until it hits sat=0%(grey). At which point it continues, but increases the saturation, and adds 180d to the hue, resulting in the complementary colour. 2. This is the middle line, which'll go from black to current colour, to white. 3. This is the hue bar, giving access to the analogue and complementary hues. They switch around so you may be able to make a diagonal line downward to always end up with the complementary.
Ideally the whole would be done as smooth gradient.
I'm posting this here to let it be up for discussion. Tell me what you think, and if you have other opinions, draw it for me.
Very cool design Wolthera ! So, the current color of the user is in the middle-top ( red ) on all your example ?
Interresting position. I especially like the concept of 'flipping' the saturation to get the complimentary on bottom. That's nice ! Also, getting hue variation as 'wings' on right and left is precious.
I think it's missing a little something, but I have difficulties to point it. I 'll need to think a bit more, and produce a mockup too probably to ease communication. I'll try to do this during this week.
I was thinking about it, here is a mockup ( parts could be glued together, or inside a square, etc ) ... a quick wheel to select a 'derivative color' , for painting light , shadow , etc... It's just 8 direction with Luminance ( or Lightness, Value) + and - , and Chroma ( or Saturation ) + and - and combinations. Each 1/8 slice got main color at center, and analog on border. I coudn't find this choice on the first mockup. But I failed at adding complimentary color proposition, or other 'smart color suggestion' depending the current color selection. ( triad, quad ; complementary with inversed sat and lum , etc ). But that's the limit of my brain. Other opinions or mockup development, draw it for me
