I don't I have the skills to contribute with code but I've multiple versions of Krita on my system.
Do you think it would be difficult to start also a local branch for the sake of testing?
My aim is to practice to add and commit changes with git.
Thanks

No, that should be really easy: there's no real difference between a local branch and a remote one, so if you create a new branch:

git branch krita_experiments_mvc
git checkout krita_experiments_mvc

you're already there.

Thank you for your reply.
I've gathered that a "branch" is not a directory in itself, but rather an abstraction layer.
And the whole thing starts to make sense to me now.
