Making comic pages involves drawing a lot of panels of various shapes and sizes.
My current workflow for making a comic panel involves ( My workflow may be odd if anybody has better one please suggest me) making a vector layer and drawing the panels with no fill and applying a stroke of particular width and color. I then draw the content of the panel below in seperate paint layer, to ensure nothing goes out of this panel I put a transparency mask on this paint layer . If i need more than one paint layer, I put them in group and mask the group. My layer structure for the page is as follows Vector layer for panels Group layer for artwork ( masked appropriately) - Lettering - lineart - colors background layer for more flexibility I make this structure for each panel sometimes and put it in separate group like this Group layer for pannel 1 -Vector layer for panels -Group layer for artwork ( masked appropriately) -- Lettering -- lineart -- colors Group layer for pannel 2 .. and so on. This helps me to move panels if i want at later stage. Movement is easy but changing the shape involves changing the shape on the vector layer and the mask for the group. I was asking for a feature request which would make this an easy process. I googled a bit and found that manga studio has paneling made easy. it has "Panel layers", from what i have read and understood, if one creates a panel layer and draws the frames the masks are automatically created with frame border. This can be later modified in any stage. Modifying the panel shape also modifies the mask accordingly. so there is no need to apply changed mask manually. The drawing area is put inside a folder and anything that is drawn never comes out of the panel dues to automatic mask. One can cut and make two new panels out of single panel, Put all drawing area in single panel folder with collective mask or have seperate folder for seperate panels. for better clarity you can see this video. So this system makes the paneling easy with the flexibility of modifying the panel at any stage and not having to do extra work and modifying the masks. Can we have something like this or may be better system. I hope I have clearly explained the feature. Pardon me for any wrong spellings or grammatical error. thank you |

Héhé, well this can be easily achieved this way:
Group layer for artwork ( no mask needed) - Lettering (disable alha channel by checking «inherit alpha« icon) - lineart (disable alha channel by checking «inherit alpha« icon) - colors (disable alha channel by checking «inherit alpha« icon) -vector layer for frames filled with white background layer Also you can use the Stroke selected shapes feature to add brush-painted outlines to frames on top of everything. PS: that's how my comics templates work, except before I also used a clone of the vector layer to add the outlines on top, but now I use the stoke selected shapes instead for this ![]() https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=P ... 83225EEBD4 |

Hey Animtim thanks for the wonderful solution, this is great workflow for flexible frame.
Thank you for answering the question in IRC too. |

Hi everyone,
I am not an artist and I have read with great interest this post. Hopefully, in the future, the G'MIC - Montage filter [1] might be handy in this respect as well ![]() At present, this filter with Krita is a bit too "crashy" on Linux (Kubuntu 14.10 - KDE) to make some serious experiments [2]. In addition, currrently, it looks like you can not create a new layer as output with G'MIC on Krita 2.9 to fully exploit it ![]() [1] http://blog.patdavid.net/2014/05/gmic-montage.html [2] https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=345707 |
