Update toolbox icon tooltips

Tue Aug 18, 2015 7:53 pm
This idea has been lingering in the background for a while for me. It would be nice if all of the tools in the toolbox had 'names'. Some of them have names, while others are just descriptions. It is also nice when educating people to refer to a 'tool', and not 'this button that does this thing'. I think for consistency, they should all end with "Tool". The descriptions after the name don't really bother me too much. Not sure what others think. Here is a quick list I came up with...

Ruler Assistant Editor Tool -> Assistant Tool
Draw a Gradient -> Gradient Tool
Select a Color from the image or current tool -> Color Selector Tool
Fill a Contiguous Area with color... -> Flood Fill Tool
Transform a Layer or Selection -> Transform Tool
Move a Layer -> Move Tool
Crop the image to an area -> Crop Tool
Shape handling -> Shape Handling Tool
Gradient Editing -> Gradient Editing Tool
Pattern Editing -> Pattern Editing Tool
Calligraphy -> Calligraphy Tool
Shape handling -> Shape Handling Tool
Edit the Grid -> Grid Editor Tool
Measure the distance between two points -> Distance Tool

let me know if there are other ideas, or modifications to these.

Hello Scott,

thank you for creating this topic, I had this topic in mind for quiet a some time.

The name you suggested are good.
I had some suggestion on distance tool. This tool not only measures the distance but also the angle between points so i think 'measurement tool' will be good name for this tool.
And you missed perspective grid tool, since this tool provides a way to create as well as edit we can say perspective grid tool instead of edit perspective grid.

I also have a suggestion to show description about tools or how a tool works in the status bar, like in gimp and other application.
that way the tool tip will be only name and shortcut and will be less cluttered.

Good idea :)

I like most of your proposals. A few suggestions:

-Fill a Contiguous Area with color... -> Fill Tool
-Edit the Grid -> Grid Tool
-Measure the distance between two points -> Measure Tool

Hi everyone,

I like ALL of your proposals as well ! :)
Since there are so many nice new icons, which are available with the latest Lime ppa by Dmitry on Linux, I think it is high time to drastically improve these tool-tips as well. At present, IMHO they look incosistent and "unprofessional" to say the least (no offense meant here...).
In the long past, I have proposed myself to improve them... [1] ;)

I just pushed out the changes to GIT. I am not sure if I can change the Karbon tool tooltips (calligraphy, pattern editing tool, etc). For the descriptions on a couple of the tools, I replaced the '.' with a ":".

What do you think about dropping the "Shift-click" part of the tooltip for the polygon/polyline/bezier curve tools? It looks a little out of place, and it's somewhat arbitrary to describe just one of several keyboard modifiers each tool offers.

After simplifying the other names, it does seem out of place to be giving explanations on how to use a few of them. The main purpose of these tooltips seem to be what the tool 'is' - and show the shortcut if it exists :)

I would be ok with removing the explanations from the few that have them. They can get that type of information in other places.
