Difficulties with the layer panel.

Wed Jul 13, 2016 8:27 am
I am using Krita 3.0. Quick group/ungroup came in at the right time. I am doing some layout work that needs a lot of grouping. But I have been facing some difficulties like...

1. Dragging and dropping layers outside of group layers is so difficult. The line that shows that "the dropped layer will go outside the group" is so hard to get and even if the mouse (tougher with pen) moves on release, it might fall into a group. I suggest that all drag-drops go above the group layer with mouse-over and maybe a right-click to drop into a group layer.

2. Groups on flattening do not have to be renamed as "(group name) merged". Its too much work to rename every time. I always name the group what I want the name to be when flattened. Maybe leave this an option.

3. Not a really a big issue but, would be simpler if the shortcut for merge down can also be used to flatten a group. One press flattens, second press merges with layer/group below, like in photoshop.

I agree on all points!

For the first one I would suggest to increase the pixel threshold for the "inbetween snapping" a few more pixels, at least when the picked layer is hovering a normal layer, rather than a group.
For instance: If we are already hovering on top (past vertical middle) of the layer below, that probably means that we already want the layer to be below that one.

Visual feedback also needs a bit polishing too: picked layer's "ghost" should be displayed right away, also a thicker "inbetween" line and a bit of transparency on the picked layer would help.

... I am pretty sure 3 is already just ctrl+e in 3.0. We don't have a merge group action anymore.

I can't say anything about 2.

1 is probably a hi-dpi issue at it's core.

1. I looked around for any dpi settings, i have no clue of it... Would not a definite key/click to drop into groups save time spent on aiming for a few pixels? Only minutes ago I had a very crucial group re-ordering and I resorted to ungrouping and regrouping. The size of the file and number of layers in a group was making click-drag a bit laggy and I don't want to miss the pixels and waste more time retrying.

2. I hope it will be fixed/changed/made optional.

3. But in configure>keyboard shortcuts there are two different assignables, 'flatten layer' and 'merge with layer below'. Its not a big issue anyway. I use 'end' to merge and 'ctrl+end' to flatten.

4. Another small thing, Rarely, while double clicking a layer to rename it, the highlight is just gone and the text cursor is at the end of the old name. So i get "(oldname)(newname)" after I type and hit enter. Thing is, most of the time it works fine('old name' is replaced with 'new name'). I cannot seem to replicate it.

I too experience this sometimes.

5. If the selected layer is a group, "activate next layer" action does not go to the layers within the group, it goes to the next layer or group outside the current group. Same for "activate previous layer" I would like to go to the bottom most layer in a group lying above. This skipping behavior is fine if the groups are minimized, but please let use cycle through every layer that is currently shown in the layers panel.

At this point all of these are starting to sound like bugs, so I suggest you report them as bugs?

Number 4 is a bug, rest are feature request/improvements. I will report 4 as a bug, but I couldn't reproduce it.

this is already reported, you can find the bug report here -> https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=336899

okok.. I did not think of it as a bug. More like a 'forgot to add' feature.
