Pie Menu (Feature Request)

Mon Sep 12, 2016 6:36 pm
Pie menus are awesome. Specially when each item can be executed with gestures. I use blender and it has an awesome implementation of Pie menus. And also highly customizable. The idea is instead memorizing a bunch of keyboard shortcuts, you can just create pie menus with 8 items and call it with a hotkey you assign to it. So instead of one hotkey invoking one command, you can get 7 more with gesture based pie menus. With gestures, it becomes muscle memory pretty easily. This also minimizes the use of the UI, meaning you don't have to move your stylus to the corners of the screen and just stay inside the canvas. Here's a screenshot of a blender pie menu for example: http://imgur.com/mlPJREM

here is an example of a more customized pie menu https://goo.gl/QodrSu, ment to create more of them, for each view and maybe make them somewhat context specific but haven't done much lately :-\

there might be something we can do. a hotkey might not be the best idea because we cannot assume someone has a keyboard (especially for tablet artists). Long term, we might have to make the right-click pop-up menu more powerful to add this type of flexibility.

Feature requests are usually requested on bugs.kde.org with a "wishlist" item attached. That is a good place for it as requests sometimes get lost in here.

I think that that many commands would just get in the way. The idea is to take our most used commands and create 3-4 custom pie menus and assign them to the same button but with different modifiers. This would help you to stay inside the canvas and not have to move outside frequently which can save you minutes during a painting session. I hope this thread catches a dev's eye as I didn't know the proper section for feature request.

all of the feature requests are organized on bugs.kde.org. Here is the existing list of all of the feature requests we have. We go through this to figure out what people think is important enough. It will get lost in the forum as we get too many feature requests

as blender uses keyboard shortcuts alot i wanted to reduce/remove the shortcuts on the right side of the keyboard,
but yes for krita it would be better to improve the popup palette.

So I noticed that if you right click on the canvas, no matter what tool you are using this pops out:

If we were to implement this pie menu thing, I'd suggest using gesture instead of a hotkey. On a right click (down and release), the brush pallete thingy above shows up, but, when you right click and drag, the pie menu shows up. You then release on top of the menu option you want to select. Doing this way artists can also use the pie menu by right clicking from the side buttons on the stylus. This also meant, that like the brush the brush pallete thingy above, it is not context sensitive (then again I can't think of a use case where you need it to be context sensitive).

Speaking of styluses, wacom tablets have this customizable radial menu option that triggers key combinations:
