Here are my suggestions for extending the brush texture functionality:

1. Brush brightness and contrast control:
Currently there's no way to change the brightness and contrast of texture. Only workaround is to edit the texture file itself and import it. But is takes additional steps and clutters up the pattern browser. There's also strength slider, that only controls opacity down.
Controlling brightness and contrast allows to fine tune the brush, make stroke appear stronger, or weaker, sharper with visible details or softer, where texture is subtle.

2. Apply texture to whole stroke:
Currently texture is applied to individual dabs, that makes texture appear stronger in continuous strokes. Option to apply texture to whole stroke instead of single dab would allow to get stroke with texture allied evenly.

3. More modes for applying texture:
More modes would allow to get more variations of texture strokes. Darken, overlay, height, hard mix, etc. Some of these may be redundant because of similar effect to each other.

I would like to see a mode for hard and sharp brush strokes (but without jagged edges), similar effect to subtract + low spacing mode, except stroke never gets half transparent. It would be advantageous over subtract mode, because it doesn't require low spacing and brush is a lot faster. In Photoshop it's "hard mix" if I'm correct.
