Small Request

Thu Nov 23, 2017 6:03 pm
Hi, at the moment, all textures used in a pixel brush(pattern) are converted to black and white. Is it possible to make an option to use colour too?

Traditionally to add a colour texture to your painting, you would drag and drop the texture image onto a new layer and erase/rotate etc. However i'm looking for a quick and dirty way to add a colour texture to my image. This way I can have several textures saved into krita, and use them directly as a brush. Just for clarity, I'm aware you can use stamps and change the brush tip to a texture image, but I don't want to use a texture AS a brush, I just to want the texture to be REVEALED as I paint. Textures already work this way (minus colour)

Hope this was clear.

You can do this using clipping groups. Create a layer and press ctrl-shift-g. Place your texture on the upper layer and make your brush strokes on the bottom layer. Your texture should be revealed as you paint.

This also works for already existing layers with paint on them, so you don't have to do the erasing as you described. Hope this helps!

Hi ramskulls, thanks this works, but i'd still prefer a different workflow. Much like other software there are many ways to do the same thing, but its all about what is comfortable for the individual. So I hope that my request is still considered.

Thanks again.

Have you tried using the pixel brush->source->pattern? https://docs.krita.org/Parameters#Source Because I think that's exactly what you'd want to use(it uses the active texture, btw).

You can also make a fill layer with a pattern, go to edit->clear, and then paint to reveal the texture(painting on fill layers is effectively the same as painting on a transparency mask on the layer).

@TheraHedwig wow two very great options.Perfect!

I completely missed "source" I thought it was a just a heading for the check-boxes beneath, silly me. Exactly what I need.
