I'd like a way to access the overlay mode for brushes so I can turn it on and off as needed, a tool bar button and/or a check box in tool options or something like that would be really good. I switch back and forth between working in a wet medium and dry medium kind of way so it would save time and frustration to not have to dig through the brush editor each time, nor to have to have duplicate brushes with the option on.
Love how far this program has come over the years, it became my go to for more detailed painting several years ago. I try other programs occasionally, because I just like trying art software, but, other than MyPaint for sketching and speed painting, I keep coming back to Krita. So, big thanks to everyone who works on it! |

Unless you are on a drawing display type of device (no keyboard) your best choice is to use the shortcuts to access the blending modes, you can modify the original ones for something that suits you better, they are under Settings>Configure Krita>Keyboard Shortcuts then there just type overlay and it will show you the to options with their respective shortcuts.
You can also put it on the toolbars, Settings>Configure Toolbars and in the left panel search box type overlay, then just pass it to the right and arrange its position, this one doesn't have an icon, thus the "button" is the whole name for it", its less practical if you have a busy bar, other wise is also your second best bet ![]()

I did notice the blending mode shortcuts when trying to look for this feature, thank you for the suggestion. I'm talking about a brush setting check box for color smudge brushes that mixes underlying layer colors as well as colors from the current layer, which, unfortunately, there's no shortcut option for as far as I can tell. So far the best option has been to make duplicate brushes with it turned on (since there's none that have it turned on by default as far as I can find), but it kind of makes a mess of the brush list. Some programs handle it with a layer option instead, which might be another route? I have no idea which would be easier to implement in Krita cause I'm not familiar with the code base at all. |

Oh, I misunderstood the question, indeed the brush and layer blending modes are not related to this setting in the brushes as they produce different results. I don't know for sure, but I think those options only live within the brush editor. Indeed making double brushes for only that sounds cumbersome, back in the days we could leave the editor open and in its own window for quick access but that brought other bugs, thus that ability was removed. Sorry can be of much help here, you should visit the IRC, maybe the devs there or more experience users know a better workflow for this.

If I understand correctly are you looking for something like eraser mode, easy toggable, but customizable for other blending modes?

It's all good, the name of the feature and what it does makes it easy to confuse for other features. Shame that feature was too buggy, it sounds like it would have been nice, understand that's just how it goes sometimes though. It's been a long time since using IRC but worth giving a shot some time, thank you.

Yes, but with the "Overlay Mode" brush setting for picking up underlying layer colors vs. the blending modes. The feature shares a name with a blending mode and the feature is about blending colors so it kind of makes it difficult to clearly communicate about. |
