So I was thinking about getting into Krita again and was was just sort of clicking around, messing with all the new fancy settings, when I noticed that some dockers have a rather heavily preferred layout so they look... unexpected in some layouts.

Is this something that is about to change or would it be a good idea to attempt to write a patch now?
Last time I looked some docks/toolbars where generated on launch but some do have ui files that, I guess, could be less aggressive with how much space they need.

You've dragged your Toolbar off the top of the screen and made it into a docker but it looks better at the top (or bottom) of the screen.
You've positioned your Tool Options docker in a place that's better suited to the Timeline docker.
You've put your Toolbox in a docker location that can be made narrower but it would be better as a narrow strip at the top/side or grouped/tabbed with another docker.

All of that can be altered by draging them around and dropping them onto the blue docker spaces that open up or by dropping them on top of existing docker groups to form an additional tabbed docker selection. Docker spaces can be resized by dragging their edges.

I recommend that you click the Workspace icon (just above the left side of the status bar at the bottom of the window) and select the Default workspace. Then try again. It's very flexible and configurable once you get used to it.

I appreciate that you are trying to help me reset my workspace but I posted this in development for a reason. I want to change that it "looks better at the top" and make it more flexible as you put it.

Krita doesn't have its own code to manage dockers and toolbar; that's all done by Qt. So changing the way the docker system works, would need patching Qt.

Yes docking could be smoother but it works fine as far as I can see, its the extra white space inside the toolbar that I am focusing on.
After some compiling of the BrushesAndStuff toolbar (or "Painter's Toolchest" as it apparently also is know as, nice :) ), the generous width of the toolbar, docked to the side with the default configuration, is caused by the length of text length of the blend mode "Heat-Glow & Freeze-Reflect Hybrid", and the other widgets in the toolbar stretches out to span that same width. This means that a toolbars minimum size comes from the widgets chosen by the user under "Configure Toolbars". It also makes my first idea of turning the toolbar into a ui file with one horizontal and one vertical mode less relevant. Ill continue digging

So as of right now the Brushnstuff toolbar can be slimmed down by hiding the "Brush composite" to this.
