Krita animation work space redesign

Mon Jun 24, 2019 3:53 am
Hi everyone. While working in Krita I noticed when doing animation, the drawing bit at at least, I don't need many menus ,dockers, etc. Especially with the great popup palette. Usually i'm just using a couple of brushes and 3 or 4 different colors. Also remembering some other animation tools i've fooled around with I thought I might put my "two cents" in. With that said i have no idea how to program so this might be insanely difficult.

Its pretty minimalist, screen real estate wise. ‘B’: timeline running vertically instead of horizontally, mimicking the xsheets/dope sheets traditional animators used. It could also handle adding new layers with a 'right click' menu, as well as with the add key frames, etc. Scroll bars to navigate the layers and frames. Maybe a red outline indicating the frame you are on and some sort of indicator running through ‘hold frames’, like a line running verticaly on the frame representation in the timeline.

‘A’: Play back options nested above, play/pause, next frame, previous, next key frame, previous. Then Kritas customizable menu bar at the top. The rest of the screen is open canvas. This sort of setup would also benefit tablet pc users with no handy keyboard, imho.
Then again this might only make sense to me. Anyway thanks for reading!

As far as vertical layouts for dockers I've been poking around lately trying to see what would be needed to make it happen. The timeline I
believe is specifically made for what it does now, so worst case would to have to more or less rewrite the whole thing.

Its also worth mentioning that a tablet version (as in android or ios) could be a possible student project this summer, we'll see if anything comes of it.

I was wondering if the verticle timeline bit was going to be an issue.

Don't forget about us Wacom companion/studio users in the tablet market rocking Kubuntu. When I'm at home my Companion is connected to my workstation so almost all toolbars/Dockers/menus are setting on my workstation screen out of the way and I'm using my programmable shortcut keyboard, giving me almost 100% canvas.

But "on the road" I'm trying my best to customize workspaces to get everything as screen minimalized as possible for that sweet sweet canvas area.
