Hi there

I'm new to Linux/Ubuntu and Krita.

Krita v4.2.9 keeps crashing on my system, only app that seems to crash ... running Kubuntu 20.04 KDE Plasma.
Wondering if anyone elese has had this problem and if there's any way to fix it? Not a great first experience when it keeps crashing. Seems very promising and keen to give it a go. I'll appreciate any help.

TIA

Please update to 4.3.0 and use the appimage we provide instead.

Okay as I said I'm new ... does the appimage perform as well and does it update, or would I need to manually look for updates?
Also could you please send me a link to the appimage? Also, where would I go to get latest KDE updates? Should I also install that from an appimage rather?
I'm still mostly unfamilar with commands ...

Thanks again

The appimages are available from https://krita.org/download. They do not (currently) update automatically, but new releases are shown in the News widget on the welcome screen. The appimage works just as well, or better, because we have some fixes for issues in some dependencies in the appimage. Read more here: https://krita.org/download

Awesome thank again ... ps, I just had a look at the download page ... wouldn't an Ubunta ppa be better for my system seeing I'm running Ubuntu and doesnt auto update? Sorry I'm also not 100% sure what an ppa is, but assuming its an app version made for ubuntu specifcally ..

The appimage is more up to date. If you want to use the PPA, feel free to do so, but of the appimages we can garantuee they work and have all the latest bugfixes.

Ps ... if I install the Appimage version, should I then uninstall the version that came with the Ubuntu flavor pack?

Generally, there shouldn't be any conflict (appimages are fairly stand-alone), but it's useful to do so to be less confused. :)

One of the biggest reasons we provide appimages is that a lot of artists tend to be in long term projects where you need to have a specific version of the software for a long period of time. If you couldn't have multiple versions of the same program usable on a computer, this would be significantly different.

Yes .. I might very well land up being confused if this happens often with many apps :)

But from what you say, regarding Krita especially ... does that mean that specific files wont work on both version? If I'm working in a previous version on a project, and then update to the current version, might that file from the previous version not work on the new updated version?

We try to keep as backwards compatible as possible. Only in very rare cases, like when we completely changed the way how vectors are loaded/saved like for 3.3 to 4.0, do we lose any backward compatability.

Aha ok, thanks again, much appreciated.
I was wondering if you or any of the devs could have a look at my other posts? Maybe I posted them in the wrong section as never had any replies. There's 2 mainly ...

This one on Dolphin SMB SAMBA issues ...

and this one query on memory etc resource usage ...
