well folks it looks to me after looking at install of linux mint17 kde it was a combination of updates and power outage at the same time that screwed up my linux mint and neon install.since reinstalling mint and then neon everything is fine again

~/.xsession-errors is re-created with the session, it's worthless from another session.
You cannot use gedit from a text console since it requires X11.

Instead attempt to log into KDE5, move to VT2 as before, login and issue
