someone said kde4 is trying to start kde5. What can I do to get it right. thanx

That's no issue per se, but got my attention.

Black screen can mean 3 things:
- plasma-shell (the desktop process) is not running (ie. no black screen, but just no desktop. You could still start eg. xterm from VT1 or ssh)
- kwin compositing failure - pressing Shift+Alt+F12 (to suspend the compositor) should "fix" that

- the splash screen doesn't finish (lookout for some running "ksplash*" process from eg. VT1 or ssh)

Hi. I tried the sft-alt-f12 keys. It brings me to the mint start page. Nothing there other than the page. I can also do the ctrl-alt-f2 to get to tty and reboot entered to get back to login screen. Still not getting into plasma5. Any other suggestions? Thanx

The login screen (where you type username and password)?

yes, mint splash screen, not sign in screen. no panels, or anything else. And I can toggle back to black screen.

I delete everything in both folders when this problem occur on my virtualpc install of neon.

Well, I tried deleting both files as you suggested... and it worked!!! . Many thanks. Now I have to get effects to work! Get advice, great help!!!
