Plasma 5 and (Tiger)VNC

Fri Feb 06, 2015 7:08 am
Hi,
Has someone managed to VNC to a Plasma5 desktop? Currently, this fails for me (plasmashell crashes on startup). I suspect this may have something to do with the requirement on OpenGL (which I guess is unavoidable?), and have posted this on Tigervnc's forum too (https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic ... zYhD09R_Vo).
Thanks,
Antony

Works fine here with Plasma 5.2.0, KF 5.6.0, Qt 5.4.0, and tigervnc 1.4.1.

Are you using SSH tunneling or straight unprotected VNC?

Straight unprotected VNC. But I doubt that would make a difference.

As you mentioned OpenGL, there is no hw-accelerated OpenGL via VNC of course. OpenGL is provided by Mesa's software renderer.
If you have a proprietary graphics driver installed (nvidia, fglrx) this breaks Mesa (including its software renderer) because they replace system libraries with their own version. So this might probably prevent Plasma5 from running via VNC.
KWin (the window manager) does not require OpenGL at all even in Plasma5, it should automatically switch to XRender if necessary (or if the sotware renderer would be used, which is slow of course).
