I am running Ubuntu 14.10, yesterday I tried KDE for the Desktop Environment using these commands:
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/next
sudo apt update
sudo apt install kubuntu-plasma5-desktop
sudo apt full-upgrade

I experienced a few black desktop problems while scrolling the mouse looking through the main menu.
I found that I had KDE Version: 5.1.1 installed so I went to this page http://www.kubuntu.org/news/plasma-5.2 to update to the latest version.

I did
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/next-backports
sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade

Then rebooted my machine. Upon restart I have no desktop; just the apps that were open when the restart was requested.

Can anyone help me recover from this?

Can you try opening a terminal (alt-f2 should hopefully stil working) and start plasmashell by hand? See if there's any output that may lead to the cause of the crash.

Also ensure that you have a fully updated Qt stack.

Either there'll be quite some errors about invalid QML files or

will be emtpy - I assume due to the intermix of PPAs...

I entered plasma-desktop in terminal and it told me it wasn't installed.
It recommended sudo apt-get install plasma-desktop. so I ran it ... which completely stopped anything from loading upon reboot.

Ha .. I've completely dorked it now.

How to I force the login screen so I can switch DEs?

plasma-desktop is KDE SC4, it'll likely conflict with KDE5 (plasmashell)

=> move to VT1 (Ctrl+Alt+F1), login, remove plasma-desktop, re-install plasmashell.

Well I went ahead and punted, created a live usb of 14.10 and reinstalled.
After my misread of plasma-desktop = plasma shell I could only boot to recovery mode. I thought it best to just reinstall and keep my files.
