Less whitespace/microscopic icons on taskbar?

Ever since moving to plasma, I have to set the taskbar size to TWICE it's width to get same icon size I had on KDE4.
This is looking seriously ugly, especially with the notification and application menu icons being about a third larger than the taskbar ones.

Here is an example:

Is there any way to
a) get the taskbar icons to appear bigger
b) to stop the notification/application menu icons from becoming bigger than the taskbar ones?

edit: the whitespace in Breeze theme is totally out of balance:

Same here, new install and icons are too small...

Add possibility to add icons in taskbar, not simply in Favorites...

I think the icon size has been changed in the current 5.2.95 beta, because I installed the 5.2.95 beta on Kubuntu 15.04 and there those tiny icons were suddenly normal sized.

It's more like the taskbar only resizes the icons properly once you log out and in, at least on 5.2. I remember this happening on KDE4 as well.
"Resizes" might not be the correct word, more like recalculates the margins around the icons.
